  • Worth swapping cam?

hey I have a spare custom camshaft sitting here that I am thinking about throwing into my car to see what it can do. I am currently running the Abbott NA cam, 210/220 .512/.512 112

The one I have here on the shelf is 230/240 .512 .512 113. Kind of the abbott one on roids you could say

Think I will notice a big difference and worth the time trying out? lol

Thinking about throwing it in this weekend. I am just not happy with my current power from the Abbott NA cam right now, need more like everyone else, lol.

btw, this is a 97 camaro v6 with the 3.8 in case people are confused with the cam size, lol. Stock cam in these engines is 182/192 .413/.413 115

I would think if your intake and exhaust are flowing well you would see a performance gain, I can't say how much it would gain but I wouldn't count on dropping half a second.

yea the intake and exhaust are flowing as much as possible for these engines, other than going longtubes instead of the shorties for headers

i assume the .512 lift is including the stock (or adjusted for your) rockers right? Heads ever been clearenced to run that high of a lift?
Im running .6xx right now, and close to the limit of the heads (not stock)

those #s are close to a ZZP GT3 cam... durations are a bit off though.. .here's the dyno for their GT3

btw what else is done to it?

abbott stage 3 heads, mls gaskets .052 thickness 4 layers, 130# springs, etc all done. forged pistons, holden intakes, etc. Stock rockers and yes the .512 is for stock rockers. Engine is fully built

so... its modd'd k thnx LOL

The heads should have more than enough clearance (which is what i was worried about) Dont kno whow much you'll end up seeing out of the cam though... a little, is it worth it, meh if its free and you have extra gaskets lying around collecting dust got for it, just make sure you get dynos before and after for us 3800s lol

now i gotta dig up my cam specs b/c i can never remeber them and Im going crazy trying to remember what they were LOL

i think you'll see a pretty substantial gain. If you have the head flow definitely give it a try. Worst thing you'll have to do is swap back right?

yea I am opening it up to get rid of these CompCams OE-R lifters, they are too noisy for my tastes and putting in the ls7s that I was going to use for my ls1 build but sold that engine. Should make the valvetrain quieter which will be nice

anyone here running the ls7 lifters? Been reading up on ls1tech about them being a little different in size and pushrods needing to be changed. Looks like I will have to invest in a pushrod length checker and maybe some more pushrods unless mine check out alright for length

they SHOULD be the same, but I know a few guys on tech have mentioned a slight size difference I wouldn't worry about it too much unless your already close on your PTV clearance.

yea the stockers are superceded to the ls7s at the dealer, but guys on tech have pics even of the difference in height on the one end. It sits up higher in the lifter. It seems to go back and forth with those guys and if pushrod length changes. hmm, fun stuff

not that i dont believe but link to kill my interest?

                            I wonder if it has to do w/ the HL124 v/s HL128 ????

either way for ~$20 PR length tool is a great investment I could see not buying one if they were a few hundred dollars.. but.......
