Oil Consumption?

The motor in my '84 Z28 uses about a quart of oil in 1500 miles. I was told it was out of an '88 Chevrolet pickup? Now it has an aluminum intake and Holley carb. What I know-no smoke at start up,very very if any smoke while idling,little smoke on deceleration if you just sit there and rev it up,my boss follows me to work sometimes and he says he don't smell smoke or see it while driving. Where should I start looking?

Rear main seal, and loose bolts on the pan. When I first got my car all of the pan bolts were less than finger tight, I was suprised that they didn't fall off. My car is starting to eat oil again, but this time I'm almost for sure it's the rear main.

Agreed. Same problem I had with my Buick's LT1, same thing with the trans pan. Tightened up the bolts, and it stopped using oil and tranny fluid. Who'da thunk it, a 185k mile LT1 that didn't eat oil. . . lol Now I gotta check the same thing on the Formula, she uses oil like a cheap masseuse. . .

pull a couple of plugs thats the best way to see if your burning oil. and do what everyone said on checkin oil pan and front and rear seals. another common oil leak is between the intake manifold and the block, more to the rear than front.

Also on an engine that old it is possible that the valve seals have hardened up. When these go bad you will notice more on a cold engine when you let up off the throttle after running it hard. You will see a little bit of smoke out the exhaust. These are pretty easy to change with the heads on the engine. You can change them in a couple of hours. You will need an air compressor. Also believe it or not a bad PCV valve can cause your engine to use oil also. They are very cheap (2~$5.00) and easy to change. I would start by replacing the PCV Valve.

Will check for loose bolts,Larry what should I look for on the plugs? Will check rear main when changing throw out bearing this spring also.

The plugs will have a black coating on them if you are burning oil. Eric L
