Car wont idle, Please HELP!

Ok I have a 86 305 tpi. The car, (When it wants to) WONT idle I have to drive with 2 feet, It runs just fine other wise. But it wont idle. I have to keep it going or it will die. But sometimes and even for a week it will be fine. Then like today, it wont idle by itself. I replaced the MAF and its still doing it, So i don't think its that.

Please if anyone has any idea help me. I'm really confused.

Throttle positioning sensor?
Blown head gasket?
bad ecm?

I know that it DOES have a blow intake gasket as it has some antifreeze going down the side of the block. But it did this before it had a blow intake gasket.

Only time I've had that happen is when my bearings were spun but you'd have that 100% of the time... or atleast once the engine warmed up.

yeah it does it when its completly cold. So I dont think so.

I think its something computer related.

Try checking the TPS Voltage. It could be way off.

Or your IAC could be bad/clogged.

also the egr could be getting stuck open every now and then.....

Ill check thos things. I went out side to start it and after the first three tries it started and stalled. then the forth try it started and went to 1,500 rpm as if it was a cold start, and i stut it off and tried it three more times, and same thing, it acts like nothings wrong now.

Those are the symptoms that my car had before I realized that my distributor was rotted out and I had lost a couple of magnets

Don't forget to check the Vac lines.

I agree with Kyle check the EGR to see if it is sticking open. The pintle on the bottom of the valve gets carboned up and it will hang open. If it does it won't idle. You can make up a block off plate fairly easy. Also remove the vacuum line from the EGR and make sure there is no vacuum going to it at idle.

See if there are any codes and check the PIDs with the scan tool.

Yeah I was going to use a scan tool to check any pervious codes or anything. But my scan tool is at my school.

Also where does the vacum line from the egr go to?

Hey Curt, my Z did this and it was the fuel filter. BTW, the TPS is easy to check w/multimeter.

I unplugged and and it ideled. then unplugeed it and it wouldnt. Then I plugged it back on and waited a while and it started and idled fine. Im confused.

My 1990 305 TPI with manual stalls when it is time to clean the throttle valve. I clean both side of the valve with throttle body spray and a soft cotton rag. My will stall when hot as soon as I press the clutch in. I could probably adjust the minimum idle setting on the IAC but I have only run into the problem twice in 42K miles.

Your car probably has a different problem but it never hurts to eliminate the items that are cheap and easy to address.

Try unplugging the vacuum line going to the EGR valve and plug the line with a golf tee or a screw. Then take it for a drive with it disconnected and see how it runs. If the problem goes away then it is probably in the EGR.
