  • What will it really cost?

Since i now lost some confidence in my motor with recent events i am wondering what it will take and cost to reach below rwhp goals

    400-450 rwhp?

    450-500 rwhp?

    For giggles 600 rwhp?

Also include install cost cause i want this done right not half ass by me.

Also, no Nitrous or super huge h/c combo's unless talking about 600+.

I know suspension, tranny and rearend will need to change/upgraded but right now looking at cost for motor i'm looking at right around 425-450 +/- rwhp.

    Thanks Guys

There's so many variables involved it's tough to put a number on any of those.

But just to throw a dart and spur discussion...

    400-450...$7000

    450-500...$10,000

    600...$15,000

No nitrous, turbos or S/Cs...all motor.

Tack on another 33-50% over that number for everything else required to actually get the power to the ground.

    Making horsepower is easy.

    Making it usable is hard.

As high as those numbers sound I'd have to agree with Jeff. There is no sense building a big ass engine if you can't get the power to the ground or slow it down. Thats why I've been doing all the other mods before my engine. I've see way to many people break or wreck their cars because it wasn't built to handle the power.

I agree with everything Jeff said. I have 400 rw hp and it cost me at least 8G's to get it there. And that is just all motor, no nitrous etc. And I've lost track of how many times it has been tuned to get it where it is at. The car is a running good but it still needs a few tweaks yet. So be prepared to spend some serious cash.

Yeah, ask Jeff how much he spent. With his 4" cutout he had 440 on the dyno.

to be honest i could have made my 440 numbers with much less than 7K.
            Doing less with more

              Without nitrous?

Including tune, brakes, rear end, axle shafts, fuel, ignition, cooling, and trans?

He is only looking for cost into motor not rear tranny and suspension. He wants an estimate of what it would cost just into motor to put down those numbers

                  Then what's the point?

It's like pricing out half of a jigsaw puzzle...RWHP cannot be measured without having the entire puzzle complete.

hey guys i was just curious what kinda $$ it would take...yes i understand its only half the puzzle but i got to start someplace. I know the costs of rear, suspension and i'm getting to know the tranny side...There is just SO many different ways of doing things and so much info.

depends on the dyno. for a ls to make 450 on a mustang dyno you will need great heads, big headers, intake , big cam.
my car only makes 500 on a mustang dyno on spray

                        Larry...only 500?

once you want to go much past 500 rwhp it gets really pricey considering you need to start building the motor to not break! To make 667 RWHP on a mustang dyno it took ~ $15,000 in mods

Jeff, I would say your predictions are very close actually if going the Forced Induction route. The 400-450 and 450-500 could be had cheaper if radical heads/cam/spray were used instead of FI. Either way the 600+ will get pricey whichever route you take because you should build up the bottom end and need to beef up entire driveline and fuel system.
