  • Distance between oil pan and pickup tube?

    Hey guys,

How far away from the bottom of the oil pan does the oil pickup tube usually sit? Or, rather, how far away *should* it be?

    1/4 inch.

"Most aftermarket pumps come with a new pickup installed and brazed into position. If yours does not, you should braze the pickup into the pump body, positioned about 1/4-inch (0.250-inch) above the bottom of the pan. Before brazing it to the pump cover, remove the pin, spring, and relief piston from the cover so that the heat won't damage them. Put the pump securely in a soft-jawed vise and tap the pickup into the oil pump with a homemade tool or one from a specialty tool company. To measure the pickup-to- pan clearance, place a small piece of clay between the pickup and bottom of the pan and install the oil pan gasket in a mock-up (without adding sealant)."

Huh... so I guess my oil pan being DENTED IN 1/2 INCH directly below the oil pump and pickup tube... would have caused some issues.

I think, by jove, we found our missing link to my engine failure.

You probably should of at least tried to straighten it out somewhat.

Yeah... I think between the fuel in the oil and the dented oil pan and not changing the oil soon enough it all just added up to a failure.

No doubt we're buying a new oil pan this time around. There's a chevy performance shop in Warren that we'll go to.

                    Get an aftermarket pan...

Well, that can cause some serious issues...

I knew it was dented but I didn't realize it was that bad.

Get a Canton, then you can get your HV pump.

The dent in the bottom of the oil pan never crossed my mind as a problem, other than pan holding maybe 4 7/8 quarts of oil instead of 5 qts. Today Brian and I were talking and it came up. we measured the dent and its position it is 7/16 deep and right below where oil pump pickup would be. So this is what I believe happened: 1. started car without flashing pcm. causing a lot of gas in oil. 2. broken wire in engine harness prevented VSS data from gettting to pcm. This caused engine to rev higher than normal and not shift correctly. 3. because of insuffecient room between oil pickup and pan bottom, high rev's caused pump to not to be able to deliver enough oil through engine, especially oil being thined by gas and not having the proper lubricating properties. Therefore bearing were run dry or close enough, to burn them and so forth the destruction. So I believe it was the combination of these mis steps that caused the problem.

Just not willing to spend $250 for a canton oil pan when I can get a brand new stock pan for $60...

I just like the idea of having more oil available, with my car I have a HV pump and a canton pan and it never drops below 55 psi, even when warm
