  • 4th Gen SBC swap questions

For those with some experience with SBC swaps I have a few tecnical questions.

Some of you know I picked up a 96 Z28 convertible as a roller to save it from the crusher. Unfortunately Ive had to start from square one since the car was missing several key items. So I have installed a mild 355 gen 1 to get the project rolling.

What I need to know are what starter and flywheels are you using to work with long tubes and true duals? I am considering a factory mini starter off a mid 90s Tahoe but I am concerned which flywheel will work.

I plan to use LT1 Pacestters on my rectangle port heads. Any issues that will arise using this combo? Also hat radiator will fit in a 4th gen that will work with traditional flow heads?

Any idea what the lowest profile carburetor is out there? I plan to run a 2 inch cowl with a Spectre dual inlet intake.

Also does anyone have a spare LT1 steering shaft and a trans cross member for a 93 700R 4?

Can't help much, but, I've used an lt1 radiator in my caprice with an older SBC with no problems.

I'll be doing this same swap into my '94 formula next month, I've been wondering about this stuff too. Do you know if all the LT1 accessories will work with with the 355?

You should be fine with the headers, but personally I would make a paper template of the exhaust port on the heads and lay it against the header flange using the header bolts to align it. It's a little bit of effort, but you definitely want to make sure that the exhaust port on the head is smaller than the opening on the header or you'll get reversion.

          Here's a guide to what I'm describing:

Since the LT1 is a gen 1 block, I would think most of your LT1 accessories should bolt on. However every situation is unique.

Your alternator is regulated by the computer. My engine harness was missing so I will be using a one wire alternator P7127SE. This way I wont require computer control.

The water pump will not work because of the direction of flow of coolant. I plan on retrofitting a traditional billet style ps pump although I should think your old one should work.

There are clearance issues with the carb hood and cowl so I chose a low rise manifold and intake setup. I just need to find the lowest profile carb I can. BeIieve the Edelbrock will work best with side mount fuel bowls.

Also Im curios about the factory brakes whether the existing equipment master cylinder and proportion ing valve will work.

I will look into that alt. I'm not sure if my 355 already has one or not. I plan to hack up my cowl area. My car already has the VFN cowl hood and my wipers are already removed so I don't really need the cowl area any more.

Thanks for the response, good luck with your swap, can't wait to see more on it.
