  • LS1 swap, 96 RS 3.8 (lots of pics)

Don't really post on the forums much / at all, but I figure why not. 3 years ago approx the trans went on my RS, lost first gear. So instead of doing a sensible thing and just fixing the trans, why not throw thousands of dollars into an engine swap. Makes sense right? Did some hunting around and found a 2000 LS1(43k miles), fuel / brake lines, tank, pump, cradle, harness, throttle cable, ect ect.. all as a package deal for just over $1,600. The car is an auto and to save the hassle of swapping even more things into the car that don't belong I stuck with the auto trans and picked up a 4L60E completely rebuilt and a new case. (the cheapest 5 or 6 speed I could find was 2g's with 70k+ on them) Also picked up an aluminum drive shaft for cheap too. So this was the start of my project.

Before the engine swap. Looks faster than it was

And.... the V6 to go with all those looks

About 3 hours after starting the tear down the car looked like so

Motor, trans, drive shaft, tank, fuel / brake lines, Cradle, harness

Mounted the plastic tank, getting rid of the old one, also put in the new fuel lines.

Trans bolted to the motor, cradle mounted

Over the following winter we didn't do anything with the car, so from all the sitting a mouse got into the car while it sat under a car cover and tore up the carpet, one of the back seats, and just crapped and pissed everywhere.(managed to kill it this spring about a month after we found this problem) The interior had to be completly gutted and cleaned multiple times, minor things repaired ect.

Motor in place, new wiring harness put in, made to fit my car specifically, headers put in

Now we are up to date for today, some things done previous did not have pictures so don't mind the time lapse to recently. Today was figuring out all the wires to the dash, and what is and what is not going to work with my gauge cluster. Also making a harness to plug into the fuel pump and connect to the body harness. Which things are Computer controlled and which is standalone between the 2 different year systems is the situation now.

Thanks guys! would of actually had the motor running for the first time today if the dealer i ordered the trans lines from didn't screw me over. They said Friday I would have them, that day rolls around and they say it wont be till Monday, and that the item isn't available anymore, but they were still coming Monday... This swap has become very tedious and expensive as of late. Still have to get a trans crossmember for the 98+ year style, find a rear end for the car, do all the heater hoses, brake booster hose, EGR / air delete, and buying an adjustable torque arm. Deleted all the smog system, post O2's, EGR, only running the pre O2's. Only thing that is a mystery right now is getting an air intake kit of some sort, nothing is pre made for this application so I have to make my own pretty much.

Looks awesome, Chris! I've always loved that paint job and it's going to be sweet with the LS1. You damn ripped that guy off a heck of a lot more than I did with my engine swap. Good job dude!

you are doing an outstanding job! When B and I got near the end of his v6 to lt1 swap the little things you mentioned cost a lot. Suggestion look for car being parted out. Keep up the pic's man I love it.

Yea I did get the engine for a really good deal. the Motor, tank, lines, fuel pump, harness, throttle cable, cradle all came as one set for the $1,600. I was not able to use the harness or the throttle cable due to my setup but it was worth every penny.

New radiator came in today, now to see if it mounts with my fan assembly. Radiator hoses, throttle body cooler hose, and my new dash pad coming in tomorrow. Heater core lines coming in Friday. Found an elbow to start fabbing my intake system. I'll get pics come Saturday when I start installing it all. Hopefully I'll get my part done for Sunday when the wiring gets completed. Just hope the weather wont dump on me like last weekend.

Got a few things done, 1/2 the parts came in I ordered. Gonna get to work on Friday putting everything in. New radiator came in, and I finished assembling my trans lines. I just gutted the rad / condenser and the AC lines. Deleting the AC for now at least.

The headers I bought came coated... but the bung for the O2's were not drilled in them, go figure. So to weld them in we had to grind back the coating after drilling the hole. I just bought some high temp primer and paint, we'll see if it holds long enough to bother spending money on it. Its in primer till we get the headers completely assembled, just to stop any moisture from getting to the bare metal.
