Is it possible to do away with the vapor cannister that is located behind the filler neck on the 94 Firebird? We didn't save the part when doing our changover. Rather than go chase down the missing parts -we'd just as soon by pass it if possible. Not sure if it will throw a code if not in the system.
Do you have any pics of the canister? I can't really place the canister that you're talking about off hte top of my head but I'm sure if you had a pic I could answer for ya.
Well thanks for offering to help. The vapor can was located behind the filler neck on the parts car, we assumed the 99 bird would have the same system, so we didn't get the original off the 94 before it went to salvage... We ended hitting the salvage yard to get a 94 gas tank, since the pump for the 99 and tank wouldn't work with the 94 pump which matched the wiring harness we are using. I've attached a line drawing from a parts book to show you the parts we are now missing. The bottom rt. corner shows what we are lacking.
OH - I was thinking oil filler neck, sorry. The vapor can behind the gas filler is the EVAP charcoal canister. I actually deleted the line from the EVAP canister to the evap purge solenoid. It won't do any harm to get rid of it, I've heard of people using cheese cloth and some zip ties over the hose to make sure nothing can get in. You'll have a smell of gas around the rear of the car without the canister because the fuel vapors go into the charcoal canister and then the fumes are purged back into the intake manifold when it's properly set up.
Edit: And yeah, you will throw a code for it being absent.

but were thess only found on the 3.4l
It might only be on the OBDI-era cars... I know the EVAP charcoal canister is on my 3.4L v6 body behind the gas filler tube and the EVAP purge solenoid and wiring is present for the 1995 LT1. I just decided to not use it to clean up the fuel rail area.
Brian, that is a huge help! Once we pulled the plastic gas tank out of the 99 we found a vapor cannister mounted on the tank itself. Completely different looking part but it also had some type of valve on it with wiring, the 94 harness we put into the car doesn't have anything but the fuel pump wires. With the car all back together now except for the fuel pump and brake line adaper we just did not want to try to power the 99 cannister to use it instead. Knowing we could just do without the cannister worse case, makes considering adapting the 99 unit to the 94 an option now.
Let me throw one more at ya... We have the line that ran from the tank to the vapor canister, since the solenoid that runs on start up it supposed to be mounted on the intake we thought we could just loop the tank vent to the line going front to rear to the solenoid and let it control the vapor without the canister.
I'm not sure how well that would work. The EVAP system is pressurized to some extent so you would need a check valve in there to make sure it doesn't suck more than just vapor/fumes out of the gas tank. Honestly, if you're 50/50 on what to do, I'd just cheesecloth the line, delete the evap solenoid from the intake, and when you have it tuned just have it deleted out.
It Lives! Well we finally got the fuel tank exchanged, leaving the vapor canister missing in action and the car fired up! Ran into another snag in the process of putting things back together tho, looks like the wrecked 94 car which we got the rear end from and that we put into the 99 may have an axle tube twisted (pass. side). We noticed when changing the backing plates (pulled the axles), that someone had recently put a set of gears in the rearend, but didn't notice the tube. Back in the car the spring just will not set on the perch, drivers side fits real nice, but the other one is just not even close.
So does anyone know if it's possible to un-twist the axle tube?
That one is beyond my scope of knowledge and might need a new thread to get more people to read it but congrats on getting it fired up! I'm sure that was a huge relief to hear it running!
Well Thanks! Yea' had the neighbors coming out the moment it lit. Still on jack stands, but cranked just twice and fired up and to my amazement idled even!
We expected some issues since we swapped everything in the cars over the last month and half -outside in the weather, including every wire, the A/C, the cooling / vent system, the entire brake system, the works. We kept the 99 dash and did the T-top change as well. Including sectioning in the t-top roof edge from the donor car to better finish the T-top swap -that part was a job by itself.
We have a few things to look into, no blower fan, A/C clutch not kicking in and the strangest one we found looking for the A/C fuse - one really overheating 30 amp fuse labeled "defog/seats" on the fuse box lid.
Hot to the point of burnt fingers.
We'll be tackling those issue later this afternoon. Hoping just to find unplugged connectors but the defogger one has got us scratching our heads...
