  • wanna hear what a 350 sounds like with a thumpr cam and gear drive?

Here is what my engine sounds like, in real life, the exhaust sounds louder than the gear drive.

the cam is a comp cam thumpr. the smallest one you can get, still pretty lopey considering.

its got hedman headers on it, ypipe with a flowmaster on the end of that.. well in the video anyways.

    waddua think?

Excuse my lack of SBC knowledge, but what is this gear drive? Like in place of timing chain? I have herd of that but whats the point, especially if its noisy as heck like that?

Nice! I am looking at the Thumpr for my SBC. From what I was reading a while back teh thumpr cams outperformed all the other cams in the tests performed. Nice choice and nice car.

Minus the Thumper cam, were running the same exhaust system, i also have headmen headers, 3' pipe no cats, cutouts and a 80 series Flow master.

yea, it replaces the timing chain, I guess for like drag racing or something, its more reliable, a chain stretches or something like that, not gonna lie though, the only reason i got it was because it was noisy like that, which isnt really the best reason to.

in all reality, when you are actually standing by the car, the whine isnt so bad, when you are in it, you dont even really notice it. the video just picked it up really well for some reason.

The reason I had ran a gear drive on my '79 was that with a gear drive, the engine's timing is exact, as far as cam to crank position. with a chain (though it really doesn't make a difference, really) on shut-down, the crank can actually rotate a little backward (depending on the slack of the chain).

Mostly, it kept me out trouble on Telegraph 'cause people thought I was running a blower set up. As the gears contact each other, they develop a wear pattern and cause more metal to go into the oil. Honestly, it's not a huge amount, nor a big deal, but mostly the whine got on my nerves after a while. Thusly, I went back to the double roller. Make sure you have a cam button on there with a gear drive though. Just a little insurance against the cam "walking".

yup, cam button is in.. I get what you are saying about it getting annoying, but the thing with my camaro is, it is not my daily driver, i won't be driving it all the time, so i don't think it will bother me that much.

seriously tho, when you are in, or by the car while its running, its not as bad as the video is making it out to be.

Believe me, there's nothing wrong with those. They are sweet. They do a great job and the timing's always right on. I went with the PJ Loud version, that's probably what eventually turned me off, sound-wise. I had no complaints about the performance though. When I shut her down, she just stopped. No sounds, rattles or anything. The ride was just over. It does sound perfect though, man.

I was wondering what gear drive you went with...and also have you drove the car balls out yet??? I was reading up on them and people were saying you had to put in a really good harmonic balancer and some double springs for the heads so you don't lose power from the vibration that is created by the gear drive at about 5500 rpm...can people confirm this or can you do this with the stock setup???Sounds very sweet though

it's just a proform gear drive, I know that proform isn't the best brand in the world, but it didn't look like a bad setup, as long as you take your time with it, it needed a little modification for it to work properly with clearances under our cover..

as for driving "balls out", no I haven't we are still messing with tuning issues, we put a new cam in it, and are going to do the 500 mile break in on it, so not until we put 500 miles on it before we can really have some fun.. we did a lot of research and we didnt find anything about the balancer or springs....
