  • bottom end is shot... what should i do??

I purchased a 95 z28 this past september thinkin i got a good deal.. ive been workin on it the past month just doin body work and this past weekend put insurance on it. after driving it for about 100 miles i hear a light ticking noise.. thinking it was just an exhaust leak.. I drive it home. the next day i take it out my oil pressure is down to almost nothing.... the ticking gets much louder so my buddy who knows alot more about these cars tells me to take the intake off and check everything out.. well the guy i bought it from was somewhat honest.. the rocker arms were pretty much new the pushrods were fine nothing was wrong and the lifters were not collapsed in any way.... everything on the top end of the motor seemed fine.. so im assuming the ticking is coming from the bottom end of the motor.... what i am trying to get at is what would be the cheapest way to make this car run again and stay somewhat reliable.. i wanna keep the top end because i have a ported intake, ported heads, new lifters, rocker arms... everything... the bottom end is a 355... should i just buy an assembled shortblock or start from scratch??? what would be cheap and not take all summer... ?? oh yea.. this car is running on some stand alone harness.. i have no MAF.. i beleive it was on speed desnity mode.. what i would like to do it take this car back to more of a stock feel. put a normal PCM back in with a MAF and not just have some mystery vehicle.. i wanna keep the top end because there is a lot of money there... so if anybody has any suggestions i would appreciate it... thank you...

Hmmm...I'm reading "Red Alert v2" on this one...

I'd say take it apart, find out what failed, and make your decision from there.

how did the oil look? when you pulled the intake did you see and sparkle in the oil or like a grey sludge by the lifters.
This would give you a hint. but the only thing to do is pull or drop the engine, check the bearing, cam bearing etc.

could have a spun barring, somthing like that wont put metal in the oil but will start to nock till it gets louder and louder then BOOM goes through the oil pan.

i had that on my 64, one big fricken hole and alot of oil.

Sounds like a spun bearing to me

yea the car was running fine. then i changed the oil and there were just a few metal shaving in it. really none at all so i stupidly thought nothing of it. then the ticking just started to slowly get louder and louder... and the oil pressure started to lower.... but i really do appreciate all the info you can give me im just starting to learn about these LT1's so its taking some time.. but thank you! im sure ill have many more questions in the near future..

Wow David - you're in the same boat as me in many different ways!!

On a positive note, you can go back to the MAF tune simply by programming the PCM with a different tune. That will save you a bit of money.

That said, sounds like you're right about the bottom end... really sorry to hear it, my car died out on Woodward on Friday night and I took the engine out yesterday only to find my bearings were shot. What you describe is almost identical to mine only I didn't hear a ticking noise - I had loss of oil pressure and my car seized from the heat.

i will thanks and that is one releif... now that this motor is blown i will build it back up and will actually know what is in it. not some mystery vehichle. and yes i can have the ease of just a normal wire harness not some stand alone system that i had no idea what was going on with it... I also look at it as a time to learn about somethin new.. i just wish i would have noticed this 3 months ago.. not now.. but its all good keep me out of trouble for half of the summer....

Sounds like the previous owner probably put some super heavy weight oil in the car and sold it knowing it had problems, once you changed it this all came on corect?

yup you hit it right on the nail.. when i bought the car the oil was over about half a quart... which should have thrown a red flag right there...i put only maybe 50 miles on the original oil and i knew i was burning some... so when i changed it i put a quart of lucas just to try and stop the burning... that helped me stop burning oil but i found the knocking...at least i found it early enough before i destroyed everything... im gonna wait to pull it later this week and im not gonna even touch anything until i finish school... so once i pull it apart ill let ya know what exactly is wrong.. and thanks for the offers to help. but ill be cool getting it out, but i may need help when getting some parts.. thank you
