getting the most out of my engines timing

i have a sbc 305 with a mild cam and a edelbrock intake and carb. i was just wondering what i should time it to so that i get the most out of the engine. I timed the engine and ran it for a while cleaned it all out and then I was going to ask you guys what is the best number to time it at to get the most out of the engine.

i know that normally set it between 6 and 10 and i have it set at 8 right now. but i didnt know if there was another place i should set it to get the most out of the engine
