  • i dont understand this problem

i was workin on my engine tonight and i put everything on and turned the key and all it did was turn over never fired or anything so i tinkered around with it for a while and then is started spitting gas back out of the top of the carb when i would try to start it but it wouldnt fire. i decided that wasent working so i turned the distributer 180 degrees and tried to start it and it sounded really funky and you could hear the compression stroke of the pistons and it was shooting a huge flame out of both headers but it wouldnt start. anyone know what the heck caused that flame and can anyone one tell me why it's not starting. i know it's getting gas and the right amount. plugs and wires are brandnew. im sure i can figure it out but i work so much and i dont have to much time to tinker i actually have to finish the car so i am asking for advice.
    thank you
    Dustin

I would try resetting the distributor again. Ya know, top dead, #1 cyl, and all that jazz. And double/tripple check your plug wires to make sure they are on the right plugs, and check ALL connections. Hope this helps. Eric L

^ What he said...the flame is from the massive amount of fuel that you've flooded the engine with finally igniting.

This is a really good way to fry a piston...

definitely sounds like a timing issue - recheck everything before trying to restart it

yeah like todd said recheck wires. and timing. sounds like your off by 1 on the cap. Word of Caution!! As soon as you figure it out and it starts change the oil. A lot of the excess gas will have seeped down into the pan and thinned your oil out.

allright i will recheck all of that. the strange part is that i took the engine out when it was running perfect never touched it and i put it back in hooked up the harness and now it's doing this so i wasent sure i played with it for a few hours.

I'm with the rest of these guys.

I had a bad tune a few years ago and was doing the same thing out my TB.
I even blew up 3 starters before I figured the timing in the tune was bad.

Is this an HEI, check all, ALL the connections to that. Check ALL grounds, grounds will cause ALL sorts of wierd problems. Hope this helps. Eric L
