So I found someone who wants to buy my truck and the same guy said he would give me an engine and a trans if I knock off $150. But this is what I don't get, he said its a chevy "405" but I don't know what the trans is. He said they both have about 50,000 miles on them. I don't know if he's talking about the 396 with 405hp or if he means a 305. If anyone knows of a 405 please let me know where I can get some info on one. Oh and he said they were only made for about 2 years because the plant that made them caught on fire.

hmm i know Olds made a 405 big block for a couple years... but thats the only one i can think of, basically there version of the pontiac 400 BB... but if he said chevy the only thing i can think of chevy in that size was the old diesel engine they tossed in the trucks.. very wierd... look into it if you could get some casting numbers it might be worth it.. if it is a rare engine that could be someones resto dream sitting there... and you could pull in some major cash for it down the road. most likely eaither engine it has the 400th trans though... still you pretty much have a nice setup i just wouldnt want to guess how much parts for eaither motor would be...Originally posted by Frank The TankComment

Either this guy is trying to pull a fast one on you or he is a complete moron and has no idea what he has. I'd go take a look at it and get numbers, see if it even looks like a chevy engine.
In the modern era of small and big block v8's, I've never heard of a 405. I like to think in all my tinkering and reading, building 10 engines myself, I'd of heard of it. Only thing I can think of is its a 400 sb bored like 0.20 over or a 396 bored over. I'm betting he's a moron. Still check it out, might be something rare or really good and be worth it. but a 396 is basically a 350 bored .06 with a 400 crank is it not?
while the 383 is a .030 over bored 350 with a 400 crank.
but i could be mistaken on the 396. it depends if its a SB or BB motor.

The 455 big-block Olds V8 was replaced in 1977 with the 403 in³ (6.6 L). It used a wide 4.351 in (110.5 mm) bore with the Olds small-block standard deck and 3.385 in (86 mm) stroke. The bore was so wide that it was "siamesed" (similar to the Chevrolet 400 small block motor) — there was no space for coolant flow between the cylinders. This sometimes led to overheating problems. Like the 455, it was painted metallic blue.
The Olds 403 was used by Buick and Pontiac in addition to Oldsmobile. The engine was only produced until 1979. Output was 185 hp (137 kW) and 320 ft·lbf (433 N·m).
The small block Oldsmobile has the largest bore spacing of any small block engine made. The 403 in³ (6.6 L) version of the small block Oldsmobile had a 4.35 inch (110.5 mm) diameter bore which is by far the largest bore of any small block V8 ever made.

No such thing as a 405, at least in traditional form. Chevy had a 402 and 409, Ford had a 406 (rather rare...only made in '60-63 I think), and AMC and Buick had a 401.
The 403s are o.k., but are limited on rebuilds because the water jacket-to-cylinder wall clearance is very small. no i found out today he was talking about the oldsmobile 403, not much different from the 400 they put in the 2nd gen firebirds. Only thing is that it has really think cylinder walls and its not even safe to bore it .020. Also has alot of problems with blowing head gaskets. It has alot of torque, but not an engine i'm looking for. The guy was gonna throw in a TH-400 with it but I don't think it would be worth it.Comment
