  • 1999 v6 to v8 5.3 swap

Always wanted some more go in the car and I have a birthday and christmas right around the corner. And my parents asked what I wanted, I told them a cam for the car and my dad said he could get me a low miles 5.3 and trany for what id have into a cam swap.

Ive done some searching on ls1 tech but I cant find the first thread I found that had a lot of good info in it. What are the parts I need? Here is what I know I need.
5.3 and trany (is there a specific year that should look for that would make life easier?)
    ls1 k member
    ls1 or ls6 intake
    ls1 manifolds or headers

Aside from the motor and trany what should I expect to spend when all is said and done?

ehh, have you looked into if a 5.3 will work in our cars without a bunch of hassles? Never heard anyone going with one of those for an fbody heck I dont even know if the tranny would work? thats a truck motor.. fbodies have 5.7s, ls1s are acctually getting fairly cheap these days, I know if it was me id save a LOT of hassles and just get a complete fbody ls1 with tranny and all wiring, pcm, accessories, and kmember out of a partout or something

Aside from the accessories and the intake the ls1 and the 5.3 are the same externally, they even use the same tranny and supposedly the same wiring harness. I know the prices of ls1's are coming down but so is everything these days. Im talking getting a complete low mileage 5.3 still matted to the tranny with harness and pcm for under 400. I havent seen any ls1's in that price range.

Thats kinda what I was thinking, by the time I get a k member and the other ls1 stuff, I still should come in under the cost of an ls1 and tranny. Even if it doesnt get done right away its not like im sitting on a $1500 motor and tranny I could be using. Im just glad I finially got a good enough DD so I can start to have some fun with the car!

Anyone who has done any v6 to v8 swaps preferable 3800 to ls1 or similar please chime in and let me know of anything else I would need for this.

lol, i did just the opposite, i bought a racetronix and installed it less than a month before selling my car, my stocker was completely fine, my plan was to up the boost and intercool but I decided against it. Then I didnt want to bother putting the stock back in again when i sold it, now im wishing I did. 150 bucks that I could have made, or put it in the new car.

fuel pump and plumbing can be left the same. Use a 97 fuel regulator that converts the 2 line setup to 1 line for the fuel rail.

                          engine w/ accessories
                          trans
                          wiring harness
                          kmember
                          steering rack and knuckle
                          gauge cluster
                          radiator
and a few other odds and ends but those are the majority of them

The v6 pump will have the umph to feed the v8?

stock or modified? You can put in a walbro and it would still work.

One thing though I hear the wiring to the gauge for the fuel level and such is slightly different.

Check that site out, some good info there, but it is for a 97 3.8 car so a 99 car might be slightly different wiring wise
