For a starter, if you are using your stock transmission for your 83 the same one should work because its partially dependent on your flexplate & toothcount. I would get the replacement one for your car and try it because either way its a gen 1 small block.

i put the flywheel on my var and the starter is about 3 inches away from the flywheel. my car is orrigannally a 5 speed not a 700r4 and i have to get a starter with staggered bolt pattern small enough to fit the flywheel.

Ok, so what tranny are you using then, the 5-spd or the 700?

Well, your car is a Z28 to right? If that's the case you should have had a 305 in there originally, and you are using the original tranny and flywheel, the same starter from your 305 should work. If you don't have it, I would think you could go get a replacement one for an 83 Z28 with a 305 and it should bolt right up and work as they are both Gen I engines. I think the starter holes are all in the same location, I've had my starter on 3 different engines ranging between 1970 and 1985, all Gen I small blocks. The only difference would be if its a 153 or 168 tooth flywheel. Then the starter is different. But I would think you'd have the 153 tooth.

CMJ is also the suffix for a 1980 305. sounds like you want a starter for a 153 ring gear with a staggered pattern. Am pretty sure that is the starter i have on my 1977 Nova 305
