  • How to pull a 4th gen motor

How should you pull the motor in your own garage..through the top or bottom..

  • #2
you typically need a hoist to go through the bottom, but that is the easier way. if you have no hoist, gotta go through the top.

it is much easier to drop the engine and trans at once through the bottom, however if that is not an option. unbolt the trans. take out the radiator and fans to give yourself some room and just pull the motor alone from the top. it's a tight squeeze but it can be done (i'm assuming LS1...the V6 cars might be easier as they are not as long of a motor)

just make sure you have all the random stuff off like headers, disconnect the entire harness and flop if off to the side so it doesn't get caught on anything. might have to remove the steering column shaft. not 100% on that though, taking the intake off might give you a little more room.

i pulled my motor out of the top of my car when it was just my motor and stock K-frame. i put Just the motor back in the top but it was with an AJE K-frame and since greg and myself made the new motor mounts, my motor sits much further down and back so that gives me a lot more room to play around with

I was thinking lifting the front end up by a cherry picker and do it from the bottom

they were designed to go in and out through the bottom...

dont make it harder on yourself than it has to be. Use the hoist to lift the front of the car off the engine.
