If E85 makes it big I hope they will make retro tuning kits. So older cars can run it.

There's alot of misinformation in this thread. I'm going to bed or I'd fill in the gaps/mistakes. Don't take most of the things said here as gospel.
The exception is what Will had to say, he's dead on, as always.

There is a few things do need to be changed when running e85 like a presvouis response. Fuel pump and lines, fuel rails and fuel injectors, also
o2 sensors. But do you know that you have to burn twice the amount of e85 to go the same distance in regular gas. The only e85 will be cheaper is if more stations will supply a pump for it. But for rite know until it becomes more avaible to the public I will stick to gas. The older S10 after 95- 98 already where setup to run e85 but only if you have the gas compesition sensor which is located in the engine compartment on passenger side frame rail down by the fire wall. Its been out for a while but no one really knew. Most 06 to new Chevys all are e85 equiped, but be careful if you run e85. They say you really shouldn't mix them together due to it will confuse the computer and may set a check engine light. they say if you are going to run e85 to use it for a while and not to switch back and forth. Took a class at work invovling gm vechiles with e85 and drivabilty concerns and system operation.

My new Silverado is equipped to run e85 and Ive yet to try it. I was told i can mix the two gases or run one or the other, just make sure my truck runs for at least 2 minutes before I shut it off after filling up. Basically giving the ecu time to remap itself. I dont want to lose horsepower or mileage, price would have to go way down.sigpic

You don't use twice as much E85. They say you might lose 12-16% in mileage but there was an article in Sport Truck where they got an E85 Silverado and did a couple runs one on gas and one on E85 and they actually got 1mpg BETTER running E85. You don't lose HP with E85 as it is a higher octane, it just doesn't contain as much energy per unit as gasoline does. The only S10's that could run E85 were the 99-02 2.2 4 bangers. I have a 98 and can't run it and they dropped it for 03 for whatever reason. There are also numerous older Taurses and Rangers that were equipped to run E85. Only the new 5.3 V8 GM's can run E85 and I believe that you can get a normal 5.3 that is not equipped to run E85. I still believe it is a better alternative to gasoline once production plants get ramped up and distribution networks get set up.

I tried running a tank of E85 a few months ago in our '99 Jimmy and it reacted badly. It acted like it wanted to stall every time I hit the accelerator pedal. The people at Meijer where I bought it said that any car newer than like an '89 would run fine. I love the idea of E85 and it made me feel great knowing that was one less tank of conventional fuel I was using. But that feeling faded quickly after my car nearly died right in the middle of oncoming traffic!

Check the site I posted above. It has all the vehicles capable of running E-85 listed.Originally posted by pheonix_risingI tried running a tank of E85 a few months ago in our '99 Jimmy and it reacted badly. The class I took from gm about E85 told that if you mixed the two together you could runn into some drivabilty issues and also if you keep switching back and forth as in one tank gas and the next E85 all the time. You can't get a non E85 engine in 07 impala, truck, or malibu when I asked one of the sales men at my dealer I worked at. Diesal is the only expection. And no not all vechiles 98 and new can run on E85. Those guys at meijers are crack heads.

Get gone is correct, it's a low percentage not double. And e85 does not have a higher octane. Hence 85 it's 85 octane actually a little lower than 87. This is why it has a little bit of power while using it. But overall it will eventually be very competitive with gas prices. I think that both biodiesel and e85 will both be a great asset in the future.sigpic

WRONG! 85 refers to 85% ethanol, NOT it's octane rating. Ethanol raises the octane rating of gas when mixed with it. E85 is rated at 105 octane. Many gas stations in MI have 10-15% ethanol added to "normal" gas.Last edited by GETGONE; November 21st, 2006, 06:17 PM.
