  • 'change oil' light

the light came on and went off a couple times throughout the day, which freaked me out cuz i just changed it about 1000 miles ago. i checked the oil and its full and clean. its never done it before, is there a sensor going bad or something? is this common?

Did you reset the change oil light after you changed it?

yeah.. there is no "oil sensor" just a calculation performed in the PCM that sets it off when the computer 'thinks' it needs to be changed.

If I remember right, you turn the key till right before it starts in accessory mode, pump the gas pedal 3 times, turn the key back too off, wait for a couple minutes, and then start the car. I always have too be reminded how this goes myself, so someone correct me if I am wrong...

turn it to the on position and hold in the gas reset/trip button for about 10-15 seconds until it starts to flash about three times, then it will reset. i always forget to do this as well after i change the oil

Thats what I do with my 03 truck.
I dont know about the 99 SS! It doesnt have enough miles for the computer to think about a oil change.

This is the way the owners manual tells you to reset it. Never heard of pumping the gas pedal before. I just reset mine in the V6 since it was on and needed an oil change. I always change the oil in the SS once a year since I only put about 5-6K on it and I run Mobil 1. I pull the battery for the winter so it never comes on.

yep - virtually any gm vehicle will let you reset it by pumping the gas pedal.

I've never understood why they make it so difficult in the owners manual (especially the ones that tell you to go through all your radio settings) but they all will reset through the pedal.

Just turn the key to the run position then within 5sec pump the pedal 3 times ending in the down position - hold fold roughly 30sec then release turn key off followed by a restart (you don't have to wait at all), also if it doesn't work with 3 pedals try four pumps. Some vehicles require and extra pump.
