  • Front Dif Seal Blown

So I was changing my wheels this evening and I found that my front differential seal is leaking copeous amounts of fluid. Has anyone else had this happen to their car? How easy is it to fix? I'm not gonna drive it until I fix it for fear of burning up my gears.

If it is the pinion seal, then I would have to agree. I looked up the history on my car, mine was replaced twice under warranty and who knows how many times after.

usually if the pinion seal is leaking its due to a bad bearing or the crush sleeve being crushed more than it was set to intially(hard launch) which then allows play in the pinion.
Some people replace them and just tighten the pinion nut tighter than it was intially set to but the proper way is to take it all apart and replace the sleeve.

What is involved in replacing that crush sleeve?

Tearing out the pinion gear which includes removing tires, brakes, axles, dif/ring gear, driveshaft, and finally pinion gear

It's time consuming, not hard. I've done about 12-15 and own all the equipment needed to do the job

Well... I just dug through my repair manuals and have decided to look into new gears while I'm at it. My car has 2.73 gears and I think I'd replace them with 3.23s. Do our cars have limited slip rear ends?

You'll wanna go steeper then a 3.23. What trans you have? An A4 car is really nice with a 3.42 and M6 cars love the 3.73's

I've got an A4 with a 2.73 rear in it currently. I'll look into the 3.42.

idk about going from a 2.73 but I went from a 3.23 to a 3.42 and couldn't tell much of a difference at all. If I had to do it again I would go with a 3.73 for sure

Has anyone here ever heard of the spacer that can be bought to replace the crush sleeve and doesnt get crushed and can be re-used.

I remember seeing something about it on one of those muscle car shows on Sunday mornings.
