My friend has a welder Im gonna have him weld mine when I pick up my 10 bolt this week. If you want I can talk to him and he might do yours if you toss him a few bucks.

Let me know if he can do mine too. I really don't want to spend more than $20. Let me know what a fair price is cause I don't know.Originally posted by YoshiBear View PostMy friend has a welder Im gonna have him weld mine when I pick up my 10 bolt this week. C-clip elims get rid of the "safety" of the c-clip in a gm axel... junk in my opinion... the idea of the c clip is it holds each axel shaft in the housing but if too much power or strain were to happen the c-clips would break and the axel shafts would fall out instead of the whole axel binding up... which is fine in a daily driver but if you plan on some power "stress and strain" comes with it... so you gotta ditch the c-clips... a c-clip elim kit pretty much bolts the axel shafts right to housing... more strength for sure... about the only thing you can do to a 10 bolt is stronger axel shafts, gears, and c-clip elims and then cross your fingers and pray it holds together... i beat the crap outta mine and havent had a problem yet but not much is gonna bullet proof a 10 boltOriginally posted by Frank The TankTook the restrictor plate off to give the Red Dragon a little more juice. You can beef up a 10-bolt to handle 400 RWHP, which is enough for a 12-flat quarter mile. 10-bolts can handle launches to mid-eleven second E/T's if you build them right. Stockers won't hold up to that much abuse though.
If you want the axle tubes welded, you can bring the axle housing over to my house and we'll fire up the welder. I'm in Haslett, near East Lansing.
Other items to beef up the axle are the stud girdle, along with some Moser 28 spline axles. Replace the crush washer with a hand-lapped steel spacer and be meticulous in the setup of the gear lash. Use good, strong gears from Richmond, Strange, etc. and the axle will live.1984 Pontiac Trans Am. Well, most of it anyway. Some of it is 1969 Chevy. Some of it is 1982 4-cylinder Firebird, 1987 Trans Am, and 1991 Formula 1LE. Some of it is 1994 Trans Am, and some of it is 1999 SLP Firehawk. The rest is aftermarket.

sounds like i need to bring some gears a cover and some beer over!Originally posted by ws6transam View PostYou can beef up a 10-bolt to handle 400 RWHP, which is enough for a 12-flat quarter mile. 10-bolts can handle launches to mid-eleven second E/T's if you build them right. Your wasting your time. As i siad before welding the axle tubes doesn't stop the fact that the pinion teeth will sheer off before the axle tubes manage to twist in the housing. Secondly with out an alignment jig you'll just screw the axle housing up more then helping it.
An automatic car car go as fast as 11.30's from what i have seen without breaking the pinion teeth off. Full wieght 3550lb car.
the rest of the combo you have correct. Solid pinion space,Girdle AAM gears. the richmonds and Motives are garbage.
C Clip eliminators would coast sevral hundred most likely close to $600 or so with axles. Don;t bother the pinion will break before the axles do.
If you have a stick shift M6 car just totally forget about the 10 bolt out side of the cover, solid spacer and gear set. Its gonna break when it breaks and there isn't much any of that stuff will do to stop it.

Well, I haven't ever set up gears before: I've seen it done, and I have the tools, but I've not done it myself before. If you got the gears out, we can perimeter weld the tubes onto the center section but that's about all I can help with. I've always outsourced that part of the project, for some reason. :dunno:
----
Sean, the perimeter weld isn't to eliminate twisting, from what I can tell. Richmond Gear engineers once told me that the welding is for structural stiffness: i.e. it helps keep the axle splines lined up with the carrier under severe twisting. Supposedly the axle tubes bend and throw off the alignment.
The T/A stud girdle is to keep the pinion gear from walking up the ring gear face and busting off teeth. The girdle helps keep the housing from spreading apart.
The spacer keeps the pinion from getting jammed forward away from the ring gear, which can happen when the crush washer crushes inwards, yielding heaps of gear lash. This is what happened to my 10-bolt in 2005, after a bout of severe wheelhop at Memphis Motorsports park. It was a noisy rear axle after that, but it lasted the rest of the summer.
--
Richmond gear once told me that the three most common failure modes were ring gear, cracked carrier, and OEM axle. OEM axles sometimes sheared at the splines, but Moser 28-spline axles (Around $275 a set) lasted longer than anything a 10-bolt could dish up.

What I am saying for the last time. None of these things are going to happen to a 10 bolt becuase the pinion teeth will sheer off before you break the axles or tubes.

well I know of a v6 that sheered off the axle right when he launched, here are pics...and yes this was a v6, stalled, built motor, nitrous.Originally posted by CollinsAutomotive View PostWhat I am saying for the last time. Welding the tubes just sounded like a cheap "might as well do it" while everything is out mod. Seem's how I can't find anyone with a welder close and I don't want to pay a shop I will just skip this step.Originally posted by CollinsAutomotive View PostYour wasting your time. My buddy works at a gear shop so he is going to have someone slap a set of GM 4.10 gears in for me for only $100 labor. I guess this guy has been doing gear set-ups for years on cars and large trucks. I'm going with the stud girdle, and solid pinion spacer if the installer is comfortable with using them. I was told they can be a pain to install.
Hopefully by mid May I'll have the 10 bolt ready to go on.
Anyone know of a good place to order the gears?

Honestly I never wanted to do for strength reasons, Its just on my current ten bolt the tubes leak for some reason or another. Welded tubes = no leaks. but looking at the stuff Sean said, I dont want to screw up the rear end. So I dunno. The Chevy Camaro was built with a single purpose in mind which it executes flawlessly...Going very very fast in a straight line until your hair catches on fire.

I'm a bit behind. I just spent over $550 on a suit for a wedding that I attended on the East coast. A couple nights at a fancy hotel and several bar tabs later I'm kinda broke for a few days.Originally posted by Phantom383 View PostHows the project coming?
I've just got it all painted up and will have the parts in two weeks for the install. Anyone know of a good place to order GM 4.10's ?
