What gears do I have?

Alright heres the idea. I bought a rear axle off a '94 Trans Am. What gears came stock that year? I always thought that all 93-02 Trans Ams came with 3.42's. How can I tell whether I have 3.23s or 3.42's? What does the V6 bird come with? Also how hard is it to change the gears?

it could have 2.73s, 3.23s, or 3.42s. Easy way to tell is to mark the hub with a crayon or something and spin the u-joint until it comes back around. however many turns it takes is what gear you have. But if you bought an axle off somebody, I would be pulling the cover to make sure its ok anyway, and also obviously change the fluid. If the car was an M6 it has 3.42s. A4 = 2.73/3.23

Exactly if it came out of a six speed car its most likely a 3.42

you bought a rear without checking the gearing first, yikes. Better hope it has the 3.42s.

yea check the car it came out of, also can check the GU# on the door if you have access to it

depends on the tranny, a stick would have 3.42's but an automatic could have 3.23's or even 2.73's

yea, you really should have checked that sort of thing before you bought it, you might have a smaller gear than you do now.

My stock 3.8L V6 has a 3.23 geared rear end.

Only the 6 speed cars. Automatics could have had anywhere from a 3.23 to a 2.73. Ask before and we'll help you out. Hope you didn't waste your money.

Just take the cover off and count the teeth on the ring gear and the pinion gear and divide the # of ring gear teeth by the # of pinion and wala, you know you're ratio.
