What's so wrong with stock 6-speed ?shifter

1995 Camaro T56.
Considering a new shifter, my stock shifter is worn. If you see how these are built inside the ball is slightly loose in cup.


What is so wrong with the stock shifter if it is a brand new unit other than a long throw. If you want more pressure for the shift feel Hurst replacement springs can be used.


It just seems like such a simple design what makes the aftermarket shifters that much better?

Shorter throw and adjustable bump stops are the biggest advantages of aftermarket units. You can jam on it full force with a lot less worry of damaging shift forks, etc.

If you try pretty much any aftermarket shifter you will love it.

Pro 5.0. MGW, and Hurst are popular with Lous short sticking being another great piece. Avoid the B&M if you can, there are better shifters for the money.

I have a factory hurst with what I believe is Lou's Short Stick. Swapping out the stock shifter has been the second best upgrade I've done. Haven't missed any shifts and it shifts a lot better.

That isn't factory. Looks like maybe B&M. AFAIK, all stock shifters have that brass color.

IIRC Hurst also used to make an aftermarket shifter below the Billet Plus, I believe the Competition Plus. It was basically the same as the factory Hurst used in these cars, possibly with different coloring if I'm thinking correctly. Might be what you have, although I'd expect it to say hurst somewhere. From the shape and design of it I'm fairly certain it has to be a variant of the factory Hurst.
