I have a 10 bolt rear end that is stock out of a 2002 camaro with the Torsen diff and like 10,000 miles on it. It has developed a howl on deceleration that is driving me nuts. It's not ridiculously loud but is noticeable and on a stock car is very annoying. Is there anything I can do short of rebuilding the thing to help quiet it down? It's never seen more than stockish power that I know of and is completely untouched aside from a girdle cover being installed.

Can anything be done about gear whine?

I was actually wondering that myself. I wasn't the one who installed it so I don't really know.Originally posted by farmington View PostDid someone over tighten the two cap support bolts on the rear cover?
That said, if I set it right will it go away? Or did that cause permanent damage?

A common mistake people make when installing those girdles is to tighten the supports down too tight. That will usually wipe the bearings if it's excessive. If your rear was once quiet and now howls on decel, most likely the backlash opened up. 6 speed car? If that's the case, no fluid will make it go away. It will need to be removed and fixed right.sigpicTurbo Charged LS1/T56

Yep, 6 speed car.
Thanks
Any idea how much it would cost to fix? I don't really want to dump money into a 10 bolt, but I'm a long way from being able to afford an upgraded rear in this project, especially since it'll see the track probably once in its life after it's done.Last edited by birdie2000; June 25th, 2015, 11:20 AM.

Scott does the rearends and is fairly local. Fixed mine when I blew a tooth off of the ring gear after too many burnouts and the tires got nice & warm. I too didn't want to put money into the 10 bolt but also didn't have an upgrade ready. So we rebuilt what I had and it's all good for now. Price was decent and never had an issue with it. He knows his rears.

I'm going to check the fluid level next time I get under it. Might do a fluid change just for the hell of it as I wasn't the one who filled it up last. That said, I'm not expecting much.
Haha, the speakers are blown so actually the gear whine is the lesser of the two evils.

Sounds good. Does anyone have contact info for Scott? I had a number a while back and never got through to him.
