  • 273 to 373 rear gear

I'm looking to change my rear gear soon... I called 2 reputable gear shops and got 2 different answers..... I have a 94z with 273 and I was told by one shop that they had to put a "thick" gear set ok no problem.... the other shop told me I have to replace posi in order to get the gear to work.... any information on this topic and possibly recommendations on shops?

I think they are both right, if the 4th gen. carriers are the same as 3rd gen. There are "2" series carriers, and "3" series carriers. 2 series will mount up to a 3.08, IIRC. Above that, 3.42, 3.73, you need a 3 series carrier. Or, a special "thick" gear set designed for this conversion.

Yeah you can run a 3.73 but you will need to order 2 series specific gears...and if you do end up ordering 3 series gears or getting them cheap just get a stange gear spacer...i had to run one on my 1994 z28 when i went from 2.73...to 3.73

I got my 2.73 changed to. 3.73. I had the posi changed so I didn't have to use a Thick gear. I had read that the thick gears are more likely to make noise. I had mine done by DTS in warren. In hindsight I would should have updated to a S60 instead of changing the gears in my 10 bolt

Just Buy a 3.73 gear for a series 2 carrier. My car has 273 gears and I just ordered a 4;10 gear for a series 2 carrier.

Those gears are quiet too, if Nick hadnt told me they were different I wouldnt have known. If I was to have to do this again, I wouldnt hesitate to do the above mod. (which may happen to a particular 3rd gen at some point.. )

Henn Racing Technologies in Waterford can do rear ends. He is doing mine.

I have 5 years on my DTS gear swap (I used American Axle Mfg gears) and no problems or noise. You might consider getting an aluminum rear cover, it will strengthen the rear a little plus make draining and changing fluid a much less messier job.
