  • Gear Swap Help

I have a thread going on LS1tech, but I'm not getting much response. The short story is that I installed gears, and everything was fine through the break in. I then beat on it and got some slight whine. Drove it for a day, and the whine got worst, so I tore it apart and can't get the pattern to look good again. Please check out the thread and give me your thoughts on this.

You probably won't get a good reading on the drive side anymore after the break in.

You're initial setup looks like the pinion was a little too deep into the ring gear. I had some AAM 3.73's that had the same whine. They were in the car when I bought it but I did pull it apart to inspect the gears, everything was setup correctly but it looks like the drive side never hardened due to improper break in which resulted in a burned gearset.

      Good read:

Thanks for the link. I did follow the break in procedure, and everything was quiet for the first 500 miles, so hopefully they are still good. I drop all the way down to a .020" pinion shim and I couldn't get a drive pattern to show, even with the parking brake adding drag. I'm starting to think my that my issues with the drive side are because they have been broken in.

Yup, I've never been able to get a good drive side pattern after break in. Also, I've never been able to quiet down a noisy gearset after break in...

I was lucky that I got my used 3.42's set well in my IROC. If you can get a clean, high resolution photo of the drive side (no marking compound) I can probably tell you if the gears are burned. 500 highway miles can ruin a gearset. 20 miles at a time with mixed speed and a cool down is the best way to work harden the gears.

image.jpgHere's a pic of the drive side.I also swapped my stock gears back in and was able to get a good pattern. I was starting to wonder if I was doing something wrong. I may just set up the coast so it looks good and give it a try. I've been from a .010" to a .048" pinion shim and I'm out of ideas.

Looks exactly like mine did, likely a burned gearset. Without seeing it in person, I'd say it's toast. Probably got too hot or didn't work harden like it should have.

FYI, use gearsets will show a very broad pattern and change little with pinion shim change. Burned gearsets will often mark on the heal/toe because it flattened the pinion and/or the ring
