  • strange noise after shift.

I have heard this noise a few times now. It sounds Like a piece of banding strap or a band saw blade being dropped on the floor. Here is what the circumstances are when it happens.
Normally when I hear it, it is right after a w.o.t. blast. Ill be just cruising along and mash the skinny pedal, the trans down shifts, and after it up-shifts, if I let of,f I hear the noise , "sproingggg" coming from the trans tunnel/under dash area, ish , area.... I know, its kinda hard to narrow down. Ive heard it 5 times or so now. Everything is functioning normal as far as I can tell. Its a new one to me, never heard anything like it before.

Torque arm might be coming loose, check the bolts on the axle and the mount at the transmission.

Check the torque arm, might be loose like Joel said or a possible crack?

I haven't seen any cracks, I have looked. Ill check the arm when it comes back from paint. I just can't imagine what component would make a noise like that. My first thought was something in the transmition, mostly because I know squat about them.
I did read about another minor problem I am having that also points to the trans. When cruising along, if you let off the gas, the engine will freewheel. In other words the rpms drop to idle. It has been this way since I bought it, I thought it may have been a function of the stall
converter. If you hit the gas it will re engage, no problem. But that also means no manual

downshifting. I did notice it durring the test ride but it "catches" if you give it some gas,I hope
it wll last through the summer before it croaks completely.
Anybody have any experience with the $500.00 trans rebuilder on craigs list? Looks like I might be in the market for a trans sooner than later.
One more thing, what is the torque arm relocation, and where does it get relocated to?

That's typical for it to drop RPM like that while coasting.

While cruising in OD let off the gas completely and let the RPM's drop then shifting from OD to drive. If your RPM's don't shoot up then your overrun clutches are bad. I don't think they would make that noise though...or if anything would inside the trans

Technically you can drive the car in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd and the overrun clutches should keep the RPM from dropping. If the RPM's do drop, the overrun clutches are bad - which is usually caused by lots of manual downshifting, high mileage transmission, and/or forward sprag possibly slipping. Overrun clutch is only two discs I believe, doesn't take a whole lot to wear them out.

Really just preference on which way you test.

Is it repairable, or just do the whole trans if they are bad?

It requires the removal of the trans and nearly full tear down.

Not saying it's the source of your problem, highly unlikely that it is. Just one of the tests to check for issues.

I think it's something outside of the trans, unless the 2-4 band is sticking a bit.
