  • Those with a TH400 behind an LT1

    How do you like it?
    ET loss?

My dad has a 0 mile OEM TH400 short tale wrapped up in the shed.
After this next 4l60e dies... I was wondering if I should just work on building the 400 and doing the swap.

I would love a 4l80e, but there is a lot more money and time involved in the swap.
I would not be able to get any transmission/transmission cross member torque arm to work.
So I am limited to a trak pak or similar. I then would need to rebuild an exhaust since my duals would not clear that.

I would really rather keep an OD.
The car is only freeway driven a few hundred miles a year.

How much power are you putting through it? Or, I should say, How abusive are you on the trans? I run a trans-braked T400 in mine. At the track its great! I cant comment on power loss because I have never ran a different trans in the car. Not having OD does suck. I run a 3.90 gear with a short 255/55-16 rear tire. I'd like to put more gear in the car. But on the e-way right now I'm in the right lane with the motor screamin away at 3600-3800rpm just trying to keep up with traffic. I made my own crossmember and torque arm mount. Its an easy job with a welder.

I havent done it, but thats the only way id ever have an automatic car. No OD sucks, but simplicity equals consistent and reliable. Id also personally weight it to shift early so that WOT shifting would be done manually (very fun!) but thats personal preference. If i really wanted OD id ditch the 60e and do the same thing with a 700r4. Brians old 93 was setup that way and was very fun to drive.

Why are you cooking 4l60e's? I was in the same boat, until I stepped it up and went to a real trans builder... Absolutely loving mine now, a solid converter and a good tune on the trans has really made my car fun to drive again.

this ^^^^ if you have cooked more then just a couple. they obviously are not doing something right. considering your not making a massive amount of power you should be fine

I got two low 11 second passes out of the last one, and maybe 20 high 11 low 12 passes.

I broke my input shaft out of the drum this last time.

Before that it was a planetary, the time before that was a sprag issue.
I have 5 pinion planetary and 29 element dual caged sprag now.

So I am going to try a sleeved input shaft assembly for now.

It has never been a clutch or band issue. I keep braking those commonly failed hard parts.

                I just got a 20,000 mile 4l60e out of a 1996 Firehawk to use as a core.

A.properly built 60 will hold your power level no problem. You have a builder issue plain and simple.

A 400 will slow the car down Na, unless you start putting lightweight aluminum parts in it that are track use only
Spraying it you will like it.

Th400s are nice cause the parts are cheap, lots of people can build them, have lots of options building them, and will hold a lot of power. Y

You lose over drive and a lock up converter,

Best bet is to think on how far you want to push the car, what are you wanting to.do with it?

Do you mean 20? I wouldn't doubt it. That 2.48 first gear kills getting the car off the line as opposed to.the 3.06.

Its proven swapping to a 400 will slow the car down if its just.a general rebuilt 400, unless you are making good power.

It is fun driving the manual valve bodies though
