  • 6 speed fluid

So this may seem dumb and that is me to a tee but On the case for my 2000 ss 6 speed it says dex-3, thats fine because I have easy access to it but is there anything better to use without causing damage ?

    any ATF will work fine.

Since these cars see most of their driving done under 2500 rpm there isnt much that a better fluid could prevent.

they break when power goes up or with high miles.

Synchromesh is too thick for a stock trans. ATF. Synchromesh for faceplated units.

Been thinking about this... am I hurting anything using the synchromesh? Is it worth changing it out for ATF? Trans has a lot of upgrades from Liberty but not faceplated.

I opted to play it safe and run the GM DexIII fluid in there, I didn't even go with storebought stuff.

Only reason I went with the GM fluid is because I was reading that basically the licensing agreement on DexIII expired, so there's no real control (or as much anyway) as to what exactly is in it. I know the GM branded formula will match GM specifications and what GM originally had in the trans in 2000 when the vehicle rolled off the line.

Probably kind of paranoid and overkill, but I figured it's roughly $20-$25 more and it's not like I change it that often. It was worth the extra coin to me.

I agree 100%, When I did mine I ended up with the day off work and I just figured Id do it since my daughter was at my mother in laws for the day, It was either change the fluid or play xbox lol. So i chose the garage and beer and then I ended up cleaning out the garage, finding a bunch of old car parts and sold them and made some money to fund more parts for the SS

I spoke to the engineers from Tremec about this when I was at the PRI show last December. They told me to run Dex6 in my t-56. So that is what I filled mine with. They said that these like any good atf, but they recommended the dex6 because it will hold up better under extreme loads better than anything else. It has a higher temp rating also.
