I will be pulling out the 3-4 clutch pack to see what kind it is. I was thinking Alto's Red Eagle 8 friction w/ 7 Kolene full thickness steels if I don't like what is in there.
Finally had some time to do a test assemble, running without a selective washer on the input drum (torrington bearing only) I have right about .030" of endplay. Specs are .015" to .036".
Question is, can/should I run it without a selective washer on the input drum? I'm 99% sure there wasn't one during the initial teardown of the trans. I only have a #73 (2.89 - 2.99mm) and #74 (3.06 to 3.16mm). The smallest is a #68 (1.87 - 1.97mm) and I'm not sure there is that much recess on the input drum, and if the torrington is raised more than .015" (.38mm) I will be too tight on the input endplay.
Under the torrington bearing (pulled up with the magnet) is a selective washer. They vary in thickness to set to input shaft endplay. I'm nearly positive that there wasn't a washer when I tore this trans down, I'll double check my bench though. Without a washer, and just the bearing, my endplay is within spec. I was just wondering if anyone knew off hand the depth of the pocket...but I'll pull it apart and get out the dial indicator again.
Just measured it, the pocket depth is .050" giver or take .001". Endplay must be with .015" to .036", which I'm currently .030"
I'll use .035" to include any error in measurement.
Breaking it down:
1) .050" recessed pocket is 1.27mm. Without a washer this is negated because the bearing rides the flats just above the recessed pocket.
2) Thinnest select washer is about 1.87 to 1.97mm thick, factor in the 1.27mm deep pocket, it would remove .6 to .7mm out of my endplay.
3) .6mm is .0236" and .7mm is .0275" (Notice a problem arealdy?)
4) With current endplay at the upper end of the specs, the thinnest selective washer would get me .011" endplay (at best, using .035 instead of .030)
Trying to wrap my head around this. I've searched and haven't found anyone stating that they didn't need to run a selective washer. I've more than trippled check all bearings, thrust washers, etc. Also made sure the input drum and reverse drum were fully seated.
Bring back my old thread. Have some issues with the trans:
No reverse - doesn't load the engine, cannot spin the rear wheels/drive shaft though.
Shift selector in 1st causes a binding issue - will spin with some throttle, but it loads the engine and will not spin will less than 1500 rpm.
2/3/4 selector positions - these work fine.
I can get gears 1 through 4 and lockup to work fine if the shift selector is in 4/OD. This was verified with the car off the ground and manually controlling the trans with EFIlive.
New beast shell, new reverse drum and band, new VB plate and gaskets, torlon check balls, etc etc.
