  • How do I figure out what kind of diff I have? pics included..

I can't find any markings to tell me what kind of unit I have.. I was told it was an auburn unit by the seller.. How do I verify what kind it is? There are numbers on the ring gear, I know it is 3:70 ratio.. Also posting pics of the locking tabs, do I need to worry about the one that looks twisted?

Edit: looked at some images online, thinking it is a tru trac....

Looks like a true track to me. Make sure your backlash and preload are correct with that adjuster looking off like it is.

The tab is fine. They can be placed as necessary to lock the retainer at the appropriate spot for proper backlash. Need a better pic of the posi but it looks like it could be a variant of the Ford Trac-lok which is what I run.

That was my initial thought, trac-lok. So hard to tell looking at pics.. I will look at it more closely today and see if I can get some better pics.. Be nice if they put some visible marking on them. I sure can't find any..

The Trac loc has been around for a long time and has had some minor variances. I'll post a pic of mine tonight when I get home. If it's a trac-loc it will have a ford part number cast onto it.

Looks like a clutch type posi unit.

We need a better picture. Set the unit like you did in the 1st picture - just take the picture from the right side and up at 45* angle.

I do not see any numbers anywhere on the posi unit..

You probably won't be able to see any numbers unless you remove it from the carrier

Ahh, I thought based on James post I would be able to see a number as it is.. I don't want to take it apart, but I need to figure out what I have.. If it has clutches I will need posi additive correct? Sorry I am still learning, but confident I could rebuild a 9" any day of the week now.. lol

Did you really run out to the garage and dump a box of broken 12 bolt parts on the floor to take a picture of it
