  • Hairline crack in trans

Hey guys. Recently I noticed that I would have a smallish puddle of trans fluid underneath my car. When I hoisted my car up at work today, I noticed a hairline crack ~1/4" - 1/2" just above the lower drain plug. I tried using JB Weld really quick, but that only slowed it down, as it couldn't properly seal it since fluid kept leaking out of the crack. I plan on draining the trans and again applying JB Weld to hopefully get it to seal. Does anyone have any advice or other ideas as to how to fix this? Buying another transmission is out of the question right now. It is a WC T5 trans if that makes any difference.

If you can get it drained completely and very, very clean - you just might be able to have someone TIG weld the crack. I'd just replace the main case as the structural integrity has been compromised.

Should be able to get the case for about $60 but It takes a bit of know how on these T5's and the right tools

Thanks. Took a quick look and I could only find cases for mustangs. Would it be the same aside from different gears and bell housing? I would now much rather replace the case, but I can weld it if I have no other option.

If you were closer I could have it switched out in a couple of hours. If you want to tackle this yourself make sure you have a NICE snap ring spreader, a press, and a bearing splitter.

Damn, I totally forgot about Andy having one...cheap too if I remember right. Robert already picked up that case from ebay and I was going to help him swap everything over. Sometime soon.

I'd go get that T5 from Andy and put it in, it will save you 4.5 hours of driving to Lowell and you won't be down a vehicle. I can still swap everything over on your current trans but I can take my time and really inspect everything. Up to you though

I am going to have to talk about that with the wife. My only main concern right now is where I would store the other trans. I already have a ton of parts at my parents, and quite a bit here in the attic.

$40 bucks is his asking price...not going to find another that cheap. Popping out of second is on decel could be caused by something as simple as the shifter boot binding up

The secret with any epoxy is to have the surface really clean. May need to drain the trans fluid first.

Okay, I've decided to get the T5 trans and put that one in while the other gets fixed. I will hopefully be able to put that one in this weekend, and then its just waiting on my parts to arrive before I make my trip to drop the other one off. Thanks guys for all your help!
