  • Replacing Axle Bearing

I need to replace the axle bearing on my car. I haven't done this before but I am pretty good at figuring things out and following instructions. So its the driver side bearing. What all do I need? Just the axle bearing and seal?

This what I believe I have to do. Take the diff cover off, take the pin out of the diff, push the axle in, pull the c-clip and then slide the axle out. Is it really that simple? To remove the bearings I need to borrow a bearing puller and pull it out. Then to press it back in, whats the best method if I don't have the proper tools?

Any comments would be appreciated, or any help. Also where is the best place to purchase the bearing?

    Thanks in advance

He's right - they aren't difficult, just time consuming. There are ways to get them out w/o a puller, but it's a bit hillbilly. It involves a long pipe and a hammer...you can probably get the gist of it just by those two things

To put the new bearing back in I usually use the old bearing to start it, a brass rift or a socket just a little smaller than the outer race to drive it home (depending on how tight the fit)

Just a heads up Shane you'll prolly need a new axle too. When I did the passenger side it was so bad it started pitting the axle. Fortunately they are cheap. Dont pay anymore than $25 for a used one. You'll need new Fluid and a bottle of this too..http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0028C...dir_mdp_mobile

I think I paid around the same price for a bottle from a GM dealer.
You can get the bearing at a local parts store it was only $5 or 6 if I recall correctly.

        Hope that helps!

Edit: Pm Jeff (detroitmuscle) I think I had planned on getting one from him back when...
