  • 9" axle questions..

Pulled my axles today... Drivers side required a gentle persuasion after removing 4 nuts, pass side axle fell out after removing 4 nuts. Pass side(left side of pic) seems very wet, drivers side(right side of pic) was dry.. Part above bearings is different on each axle.. Is this normal or is something missing off axle on left side of picture(just above bearing). Having 1/2 studs put in and new bearings(since bearing have to be pulled to remove backing plates to replace studs).. Damn 4 channels..

    better pics?
look in the tube and see if there is a seal in there. the moser's usually dont have a seal but use sealed bearings. you can put seals in the tubes.
I also put a little (very little) rtv around the outside of the bearing when it goes back in

Bummer you got the crappy bearing setup. Those are notorious for leaking

Just checked everything out with my buddy. The passenger side bearing does not even seat in the housing. It has a small gap all the way around and you can visibly see the bearing move up and Down inside housing. Drivers side is nice and snug. Are there different size bearings from side to side or is something wrong with the passenger side housing?

Should be the same Larry maybe the wrong bearing was put in??? Do the numbers read the same? Normally MOST people replace both bearings at the same time atleast I do. I would measure them if ya can and see if it's the same. I would deff put a new seal in the tubes to keep the lube where it belongs.

Im guessing the small bearing is the reason it's leaking. The seal looks tore up on the one side. Just think atleast that side did rust any! Lol

From what I read, bearings are the same size on both sides. Why would I have so much slop on passenger side. It is bad enough even my wife could see it plain as day.

Wrong size I bet ya. That's why it's leaking on that side there's a gap between the housing and bearing. I would mic them and I bet it's the wrong one. Good time to replace Em both since they're going to the shop anyways.

If the bearing was not seating in the housing the seal will naturally wear faster due to a misalignment between the axle shaft and the seal bore. Since the seal was worn you had the oil seaping past the bearing. As others have said make sure you get a bearing that fits the bore properly and replace the seal on the side that leaked.

That is my plan. But I don't understand why one side is different from the other. The tube ID's should be the same.
