new years eve i had the car out since it was such a nice day. wasnt beating on her too bad, and actually when it started making noises, wasnt getting beat on at all. started losing power and bunch of knocking coming from the engine. im thinking i spun a bearing, or broke a rod/wrist pin. car wouldnt idle and had to keep my foot on the gas pedal to limp it home about a 1/4 mile. im so pissed cause i didnt want to touch the motor at all this winter and upgrade other things.

I would yank the motor and dis assemble it all before you buy any parts. That sucks though! sorry to hear that happened. I however have been down the broken motor road more times than I care to remember1998 Camaro SS Bullseye Turbo

rod bolts were replaced with ARPs when rebuild was done. pistons were replaced with mahles. i have always been worried about the rods though. didnt think i was making enough power/tq to worry too much. its coming from under engine but not a constant knock, but its bad. definately not a way to bring in the new year. and the wifey is already saying "guess you are going without it this summer". i cant let this happen lol. definately going to have to drop the engine and investigatesigpic

You really shouldnt be having rod issues at your power level. What is the car shifting at? OIL psi at idle warm?Originally posted by Formula Z View Postrod bolts were replaced with ARPs when rebuild was done. pistons were replaced with mahles. i have always been worried about the rods though. didnt think i was making enough power/tq to worry too much. its coming from under engine but not a constant knock, but its bad. definately not a way to bring in the new year. and the wifey is already saying "guess you are going without it this summer". i cant let this happen lol. definately going to have to drop the engine and investigate1999 Camaro - 6 liters of fury.....

on the bright side, its good it happened now instead of the beggining of the year. youll have time to correct the issue instead of being carless for the summer. good luck hope you find out whats wrong91 Trans am, 305, Lt1 cam, 24lb injectors, headers, SLP LM2, SW chassis, massive panhard, lowered, modded TPI, Tuned, 4.10s, Lincoln locked

its way too early to start knocking my builders skills. i know a few people who he has built motors for with absolutely zero complaints. once i get it out and find the problem then we can talk about paul. im not nice to my car whatsoever and ive had it on the dyno plus more then a dozen passes down the 1320. also to mention how i treat it on the street.Originally posted by 85z28kid View PostHow old is the motor? I don't wanna knock on anyone's motor building skills but I've been hearing some bad things about Paul. Your only making 450-500hp. You shouldn't have problems with stock rods at those power levels
cant get an accurate oil pressure reading because i have to keep the rpms up in order to even keep it running right now, but its usually around 50psi warm i thinksigpic

The only time I have ever seen a rod physically break is due to a build error. You most likely have a spun rod bearing. If the rod was broke you would know it, trust me... A spun bearing can have little to no noise (slight tapping), but as it gets worse it will sound like a belt squeal or a chirping. Causes of a spun rod bearing can range from build error, poor tolerancing, poor oiling, wrong oil viscosity, stretched rod bolts.
If it is a rod bearing, plan on some cost in machine work, new rods, *probably* a new crank.
