A 350 can be built to make the same power a lot cheaper than a 307.
Here is a writeup were they built a 1968 307 Chevy in the Super Chevy Magazine.
    So it can be done...

And if I'm not mistaken, that would pretty much max out a 305 or 307 (without getting incredibly creative and even more expensive) as the water jackets on both engines are too close to the bores...I may be wrong, but I don't think you can safely bore either one of them more than 0.040 over...they just simply were never engineered to be performance engines...

You really want to blow people's minds?

Find an Olds 350 diesel block and get a 425 Olds crank machined down to fit it and a set of 455 heads...all can be had for very cheap, although the crank may be a bit difficult to find...what do you get?

A 440 cubic inch near indestructable small block...even though it's really not small...yeah, it's a bit of work, but no more work than you'll dump into a 305/307....but an advertised 1 hp / cu. in. (before nitrous...and the block will stand almost any amount you can throw at it) can't be ignored...and now you really are taking a fuel efficient intended engine and using it in ways that GM never intended...

But that may be a bit too far out there for this forum...
