  • No third gear

Car drove to work with no problems today. Leave work and I have no third gear. Both with it in auto or if I try to manual switch it. Any idea's? I'm really fed up with this car. If it's the trans and not something simple it's going up for sale, it's been nothing but a headache for me and I just don't have the money to keep putting into it fixing major problems.

Check the fluid first, the car has to be running and on LEVEL ground. The 60Es are very picky about fluid level. If that's not the problem its probably the trans.

Fluid level looked fine, was a little high if anything. Was a little brownish and smelled burnt

whatever you do, dont take it somewhere. have someone put another trans in for you, or rebuild it would be the better of the two. trans shop will rape you. jmo tho

If it's the trans it's up for sale. I've owned this car since about April and I've already had to replace the motor. I'm not sinking any more big money into it.

Well if you replace the trans then you have the two major parts on the car replaced. Unless you're buying a new car you could end up in the same boat which would suck also....

That is true, but I've never had these kind of issues with any car. Even my old 86 Firebird that I paid $450 and drove it home.

I'm looking to get around $2000, KBB is just over $3k in fair condition.

Was looking around on CL and found a few different places that rebuild transmissions for $350-450. Found 3 different ads and all have 1 year warranties. So not as much as I thought it was going to be. Just a matter of finding a place to park it and figuring out how to take the transmission out.

Transmission swap should be pretty quick, especially if you know someone with a lift.

Not going to be a swap, going to pull mine and have it rebuilt.

Hope you looked around a bit more. You dont want to cheap out to much with a tranny rebuild, or you will be back in the same situation you are now.
