  • 8.5" Rear End

The GM 8.5in rear end is a 10 bolt, I believe isn't the 7.5in a 10 bolt also? So Since the 7.5/8.5" is the size of the ring gear is it possible to put a 8.5" gear in place of the 7.5" gear thus making the 10 bolt stronger?

    Instead of moving to either:

    GM 12 Bolt
    Ford 9in
    Dana 60

sort answer is no. There is NOTHING you can do to a 10 bolt to make it nearly as strong as a 12 bolt or 9" and thus not worth the time IMO.

12 bolt is 8.875" so its only .375" bigger then a 8.5" 10 bolt. The weakness from my understanding is that the 7.5" gear is small. Bigger gear more strength. So its almost the same size as a 12 bolt. Now the Dana 60 on the other hand is a 9.75". So a 8.5" would be similar to a GM 12 bolt in strength.

The major weakness in a 10 bolt is the case strength. Under high loads it flexes which makes the gear contact less that idea which eventually leads to failure.

8.5" and 7.5" 10 bolt is a different case. It cant be done. The 10 bolt is weak in ALL factors. total waste of money trying to beef it up

I'd rock the 60 considering what people do to them for rock crawling, a 9" robs more power and is weaker. So the Dana 60 is like 100lbs more. I guess it would even out in the end but Dana > Ford.

Don't get me wrong, the S60's are nice but the 9" is way more user friendly when it comes time to work on it. It's hard to beat the simplicity of the 9" and the fact that it works so well and is one strong unit is a plus...also there is an absolute ass load of aftermarket goodies for it.
