  • Banging from under the car? ...

My fiance recently bought a 95 trans am with a dealer installed WS6 package ... it has the LT1 with an SLP loudmouth exhaust system and its an automatic...

we were cruising around in it today and we heard some loud bangs from under the car... mainly when he hit the accelerator a little harder and the rearend squatted down a bit... its mostly when the transmission shifts from first to second gear but we also heard it when the tires were gripping harder on the road when he hit the accelerator a little harder... he thought it was coming from right under the shifter area, but I could swear I felt it farther back almost where the rear end was at...... we are thinking it could possibly have to do with the transmission or rear end or even the exhaust knocking on the bottom of the car...... the tranny isnt slipping so i dont think its mechanically related... we're thinking somethings either hanging a little too loose or maybe the exhaust doesnt have quite enough space to it....

any ideas or suggestions of what to check out?

thanks for the help in advance guys!! and gals (thats 4 u ang!)

or the torque arm could have come undone. it happened to me once and was hitting the bottom of the car everytime i hit the gas. i had to nurse it home VERY gingerly.

Yup - what either of them said. Trans mount or torque arm. Could even be the intermediate pipe banging against the cross brace.

yeah. i shoul have asked if it was an auto.. usually when the mount in a manual is bad the shifter will jump around. the trans mount is pretty common on f-body's because not only do they take the load of the engine/trans but also the upward force of the TA trying to control the pinion angle
