  • Is my U-Joint bad?

Shifting out of 1st(auto) I hear a thud under me.
Is it a bad u-joint? It doesn't do it any other time.
Just when I start out from a stop.

Quick and easy way to test your u-joints for play.

in park hold engine at a constant 1200 rpm or so... keep it there. shift to drive, let it engage then shift straight to reverse. repeat reverse to drive if necessary. if you hear a clunking sound when switching from R to D or D to R you need new u-joints.

It does sound like a u joint. when my truck's u joint went out it did the same thing as yours, my needle bearing came out like powder! Joel's test method is a good way to find out. Good luck with that.

possible the trans mount. I have seen they knock stuff out of the console becuase of the torque arm being mounted to the trans. I have seem many loose the lower mount bolt too

sounds like the problem my car is having, it clunks and jerks alot, i was pretty sure it was my u joints but i never got around to replacing them.

Turns out it was my tranny mount.
              $80.00 to fix.
