Moser 9 Inch Rear End Questions

So I am going to put an order in for the Moser ford nine inch axle and housing package. I am really getting tried of fixing 10 bolts axle The best part about a ten bolts is they will be perfectly fine one day. Then you go stab the gas hard and the tires hook up then when that’s all done…..there is a whine coming out of the rear end afterwards. With not having much experience in 9 inch rear end I have a few questions before I order.

How do you fill drain the fluid? Is the a plug on the side of the third member?

Do I need to order the 70 dollar drain and fill plug option on the housing when I order it.

There is a hole on the side to fill the axle, just like you would see on a 10-bolt. Draining is a different story. Since the Ford 9" does not have a cover to unbolt, you have the choice of removing the entire thrid member or paying an extra fee to have the drain hole installed in the bottom of the housing. I chose to pay the extra fee and am very glad I did because you would essentially have to drop the rearend to change the fluid (remove brakes, axle shafts, torque arm, etc).

BTW-don't use the cheap gaskets to seal the thrid member to the housing, but rather use RTV. Otherwise you will be dropping that third member to fix a seal.

You could always use a siphon pump to suck the gear oil out of the fill hole.

Pay the extra money for the drain plug....unless you order a midwest 9" rear...they come with them standard. Also make sure you get the tapered axle bearings instead of the Moser's standard straight bearing. Midwest comes standard with the tapered bearings.

Also ask them if you buy two if you get a discount

Getting tried of the ten bolt noise’s to. I wish I could order two up at the same time, but I am back to saving some money up and it’s getting a little slow at work, have you seen the parking lot you can pull a car in with out blocking traffic flow.

What is the benefit of tapered axle bearings over a regular axle bearing, I don’t think I have ever worked on any thing with tapped axle bearings.

I believe the tapered ones can handle load better.

Guys with the standard, non-tapered, bearings are ruining them within a few years of just spirited street driving. Tapered bearings handle the side loading alot better.

That is my boss’s wife’s firebird, with a 3.8. The engine has a rod knock, so he found a guy selling a whole anther 98 firebird with a running 3.8 in it for 400 bucks. So the deal is I’ll help him swap them over and I get what left over, finally I can get some ls1 rear brakes on my car. Do you still need a 4th gen master reservoir?

So my car is about a 100 percent street and will probably never see the drag strip I should probably look into the tapered bearings. I wonder if you can get a regular Moser 9 with the different bearings instead of spending all the money on the Midwest.

Yes, you can get the tapered bearings in the Moser, it cost extra, as do with most things on the Moser package. By the time you add in all the "extras" you want on a Moser housing you can buy a Midwest unit that comes with the stuff standard. I really want the Midwest unit myself, however, I do not like the torque arm for that unit.
