ok so heres the back story...I bought my 2000 Camaro SS about 2 months ago. The car had 23,500 miles on it when i bought it (now has 24,xxx). I had 2 separate brands of "car fax" reports done on the car to assure that there was nothing hidden that the guy wasnt telling me or anything. Everything checked out fine. The rearend had a humming coming from it when i purchased it, previous owner was an older gent who didnt know when it started making the noise or that it was even making a noise for that matter. The previous owner did however take immaculate care of the car, which is why i found it strange that he had never addressed the humming coming from the rearend. So today i took the car to a shop that was referred to me by a friend who had work done there. The shop has been around for 22 years and seems reputable. The manager took a ride with me in the car and immediately said he could tell that there was damage done in the rearend before he even shifted into second gear. So he lifts it up and says its leaking a lil bit from the pinion gear seal and would bet that the ring and pinion is damaged. So here was his quote...$950+tax for all new seals and bearings, fluids, new ring and pinion gear of my choice (3.42, 3.73, or 4.10 plus he would recalibrate the speedo for free if some place that he has a connection with can do it. Otherwise the recallibration would be up to me to fix. All the parts used would be OEM parts not from china or taiwan.
What do you guys think about this...is this a reasonable quote? Does anybody have a shop that they have had work done that does a good job for cheaper? Also does anybody know what has to be done to recallibrate the speedo? Lastly, what are the advantages of having the 4.10 rather than a 3.42....just accelleration? Thanks.
