  • 10 bolt woes already?

Was coming home last night and all of the sudden noticed when cruising around 45mph if I let of the gas and let it coast I heard this wining noise. Sound like its coming from the rear of the car. Is this typical before they blow? Should I take it easy? I was planning on going to the track this weekend, should I post pone that?

Ive also been told by several that there shouldnt be anyway this should blow that up, not without stickies anyway. The tires should break loose first. But Ridings has a hell of a transmission under this thing and when it grabs second, its a hell of a ride.

    Thoughts?

It doesn't take much to make a ten bolt start to whine. You should be fine by continuing to drive it though, I would however avoid beating on it real hard.

GM rear ends are all notorious for picking up gear whine after a few good launches.

This time last year? Maybe the year before I put a whole new rear in, just swapped my brakes over, out of a 20ish thousand mile 6 speed car. Donor car was also a 99. Torsen 3.42's.

hmmm that would have to be the first EVER if you broke a 10 bolt with an auto and street tires.

Not saying its broke yet, but the noise it makes is, different. It only makes it when there is a reverse load on the gears though, i.e. backing up, or decelerating with the converter locked(expressway/highway its more noticeable). All I know is it never did this with the v6 and didnt with the new motor till last night. I was kinda hard on it thoughout the day, but I wouldnt say I was being cruel or anything. It should be able to handle 2 or 3 two to one downshifts from 30, I would hope anyway. Not sure whats worse though, when it downshifts or when it goes back to 2nd. Either way, I know theres cars out there makeing way more power than I am, just not sure about what they have for a trans.

Anything with the word BUY in it is worse. If it needs a new rear its gonna sit for the rest of the season. I have no $, and Im working 2 jobs picking up shifts whenever possible just to pay the current bills. And im switching from mott community college to u of m in the fall. Trying as hard as I can to avoid student loans.

Looks like the Intrepid may be coming out of hibernation a bit early this year......

Mike warned me to take it easy on my rear end - he said if I break the tires loose I need to slowly bring it back under control... he said if it catches traction real quick the rear end will go BANG! His transmissions and converter packages are pretty damn nice if I do say so myself

I also heard wheel hop is a killer to these things, I havent had to much of that really, only 1 or 2 instances since I got it put back together, and ive gotten out of it if I feel it at all.

that is exactly why i sold my nittos. most street tires you dont have to worry about catching traction too fast.

I would just take it easy on the car and not launch it for the time being.
