  • 700r4 Speedometer Conversion question

    I have a 1984 Camaro that had a 350 Trans that uses a speedometer cable and want to put a 700r4 Trans with electronic speedometer. Is there a kit or a way to get my old cable speedometer to work? Thanks is advance.

      You can get a different instrument cluster for pretty cheap.. Thirdgen.org or junk yards.

        First thing to pay attention to is to make sure the speedo gears in the Tranny are matched to your dif (piece of cake to change if they're not right) .

        I'm swapping in a 700R4 from an '84 TA right now into my '79 Camaro (TH350) and as far as I've noticed so far it should thread right on. I haven't checked length yet though. If the 700 you're putting in is newer and has the electric speedo then you might be best off finding a dead older trans to tranfer the housing/gear from.

          and to help you Mr. UjGearhead.. No the length is not the same UNLESS the th350 was a long tailshaft 9" to be exact. I dont believe they were used in Camaros. You'll be needing a driveshaft.

            I didn't pay much attention to it (I'm a LONG way from worrying about the minor stuff), but I already figured that my speedo cable will probably be about 5-6 inches short (no big deal though). I'm also pretty sure the F-bodys never came with the long tailshaft as they were meant for the bigger cars (Impala I know for sure). I also knew from the start that I'll be needing a shorter driveshaft. Before anybody mentions it, I also know that I have to wire up a circuit for the TCC It's all easy stuff though. Especialy when I should have all the parts already laying around here somewhere. Even if it wasn't all that easy, the nifty factor makes it all worthwhile. Besides for getting better low end performance AND managing to get around 1500-1600 RPM cruising speed on the Turnpike! Is there really any reason not to swap to O/D

              Theres a reason if ya like to bang gears! I swapped from a 700 to a 350 in my car. Its cheaper and easier to build a stronger trans. Easy on the wallet in that way.. Depends on how you wanna spend yur money.. eventually I'll be losing it again at the pump. Oh well its better than breaking stuff!

                Well, that's true. The 350's are alot cheaper to build. I break those on a regular occasion though no matter which car they're in, so my opinion on them for strength isn't high to start with (which is why I usually have a couple of spares lying around). I figure it gives me a good reason to change the oil while i'm under there. I'm planning on the 350-400 hp range on this one with high gears in the rear, so we'll find out exactly how strong the 700's are. If all else fails and I get tired of throwing trannys in toys, I have a 400 I can dump in it.

                    Give me a call

                    586-843-9191. Some 700's have the holes drilled for a speedo clip, which would make it easy.
