while being slow at work right now, I've been trying to find anything on the Tremec T5 Transmission, haven't found crap, don't know if its the internet security on there preventing me from finding anything or what, but I wanna know the limits to the T5 in any way possible to see if I need a new transmission or not.

Here are a few informational threads over on TGO about the T-5 trans
http://www.thirdgen.org/techboard/tr...atibility.html
http://www.thirdgen.org/techboard/tr...mec-t-5-a.html
The Tremec has a 3550 and the TKO trannies. The TKO is rated at 550 ft/lbs! The 3550 is rated at about a hundred pounds less.Either would be a great replacement for your T5.I plan on getting a TKO in the spring. I've blown up my T5 once, and that was with the stock 305.Admittedly, I abused it,but the weak torque rating (295 for WC T5) is a bad sign. They'll hold up if you don't bang gears or treat it too rough, but If you want to race it at all, you'll be way better off with the Tremec. They now offer both Tremecs for GM bolt-in applications. The 3550 is about $1400,TKO about $1700. A couple guys on this site have reported that they're real happy with them and they have 400hp+ motors.
From what I can find a Tremec T-5 is a good upgrade from a stock T-5 transimission found in 3rd gens so I would assume that it would be fine for what you are doing although it still doesnt sound good to beat on it with a lot of power...Is there any specific reason you are going with the T5 and not a T56?sigpic

Thanks Darren, Will use those.
There's currently a aftermarket T5 in it, but I'm wanting to run 600+ horsepower, I was also looking at a Richmond 5-Speed Overdrive trans, but will only spend the money for it if I need to.1984 Firebird 2.5L SBC (Red)

For that reason alone I would not go a T5 trans, even the aftermarket beefier T5's still will give out under that kind of horspower. A well built T56 would do you just fine. Are you building this for track use? Those links I posted are centrally around a thirdgen but should still help you get information on the trans itself.Originally posted by JuggaloRC View PostThanks Darren, Will use those.

Not too sure if you know this Darren but a T-56 will not live up to 600+hp either you need a built trans for those power levels, peroid. A T-56 will hold up to a lot of power from the factory but in the end the trans is only as good as its been built. Aside from that most high hp drag racers go with a liberty proshifted 5 speed when they get tired of breaking t-56 transmissions, Look at Joe Honeycutt.Doing less with more

Not for street right now, For right now just a crusing car, maybe a while later when I get a house and a garage and whatnot, then I'd go towards a track car.1984 Firebird 2.5L SBC (Red)

True thats why I asked if he was planning on going to the track with the car... I know a few people with a well built T56 (not factory but built) with 600hp but they dont go to the track nor do they beat on the car. If its going to be more of a street car meant for shows and cruises a good built up T56 would work. I do agree tho meant for the track and laying some serious numbers a liberty proshifted 5 speed is where its at!Originally posted by DETROITMUSCLE View PostNot too sure if you know this Darren but a T-56 will not live up to 600+hp either you need a built trans for those power levels, peroid. Can you argue that it's "revolutionary"? Perhaps. Just because it's "new" and "different" doesn't mean it's the greatest thing since sliced bread.

I agree, its 5K RPM dumps with traction and consistent hard powershifting that will blow up a T56. On the street though with decently forgiving tires, and a driver thats not ringing it on the shifts, i think a T56 would live behind 600 hp just fine.Originally posted by Darrenscamaro View PostTrue thats why I asked if he was planning on going to the track with the car... I'll tell you one thing, the T56 in my Z feels like 2 or 3 times the transmission of the T5 in my v6. Can shift it alot faster too.-Joel

I agree thats why it all depends on the use of the car, if your going to race and take it to the strip then its a whole different story of just using it for cruising and shows...Originally posted by 1BADAIR View Postmanuals and racing require more than you think. say you make 600 hp.
to race the trans, driveshaft, axle and all better be good to 1200+hp
I have broken tons of stuff
I agree Joel every car that I have driven with a T56 seems to be a lot stronger and beefier then my T5, partially because it is!Originally posted by JoeliusZ28 View PostI agree, its 5K RPM dumps with traction and consistent hard powershifting that will blow up a T56. But If the car is going to be used for street purposes a built T56 would hold up fine IMO.
