  • ring and pinion the same

Are the ring and pinion(whole center section) the same from 3rd gen to 4th gen? I guess my question is are they interchangeable?

I do believe that a 3rd gen ring is bigger than a 4th gen. but I could be wrong?

Don't know if that would make a difference though.

Hmmm...good question...I don't think the 3rd gen 9-bolts cross over into anything, but not sure on the others...

If it's a ten bolt, yes. Identical. The gears out of any F-body, G-body, S-10, etc. from '82 on up will bolt into any other 7.5" ten bolt. Including the 7.625 gears from later years. The carriers are the same.
