hey guys, im new to the site and was wondering if anyone has had this problem or knows anything that may help me out... i just bought a 00 camaro ss with 23,000 miles on it and there is a humming noise coming from the rear of the car that gets louder as my speed increases. My first thought was wheel bearings but i dont think thats what it is. I jacked up the rear end and it sounds like its coming from right where the drive shaft meets with the rear end. Any help or suggestions are appreciated.

you sure its not the gears in the rear end itself?01 NBM Base SS build #514 M6 Pat G/EPS 230/234 111+4 Cam, LS2 Heads, Tick Master,Extreme Chassis 8.8 with 4.30's, BMR LCA And Torque Arm, Edelbrock PHB, FIPK intake, Ported TB. Jet-Hot LT Headers TSP True Duals Tuned By SB Tuning

i was looking at my chilton book to see just what parts are involved right there and what i think is, its the bearings in the rear end where the driveshaft fits in. I was curious if this has happened to anybody else and get a second opinion. my plan is to take off the driveshaft from the u joint and make sure that nut is tight (i think its called a companion flange or something). but if thats not it, ill prob have to take it somewhere to get it looked at. I really dont think its that nut because when in gear and giving it gas, the u joint is not goin in and out of the rearend (no slop) so i think that nut is still tight. As far as it being the rearend gears...could be, ive never had a rearend go out on me so i dont know what it sounds like. the gear oil was full when i checked it.sigpic

Is it making a whining noise when you let of the acc? If it is it could be a bearing in the rear end
Also somthing to look at alot of aftermarket gears are noisy I know your car is near stock but any chance theres some aftermarket gears in there? whats your rpms at 70 in 6th gears?
Last the lash for the gears could just be off causing it to make noise01 NBM Base SS build #514 M6 Pat G/EPS 230/234 111+4 Cam, LS2 Heads, Tick Master,Extreme Chassis 8.8 with 4.30's, BMR LCA And Torque Arm, Edelbrock PHB, FIPK intake, Ported TB. Jet-Hot LT Headers TSP True Duals Tuned By SB Tuning

I would pull cover off rear of rear end before I would bother drive shaft. Look for metal particles or shavings. thats best indicator of gear problems, bearing problems in rear. The noise you describe its the highest probability of it being rear end. Oh get some rear end lub to refill rear end after you take off plate.sigpic

Angie's car did that from the factory - 2002 Firebird - and when they opened the rear end cover there was metal shavings all over inside. Mis-shimmed from the factory.

Open her up and see if there are any shavings inside.
You either have a bad Pinion bearing or your gears are messed up.
