  • Rear end noise... :(

So when I really get on it my rear end makes a "whhoooshhhhhh" noise, similar to a blow off valve. When I get on it sometimes the car goes sideways and sometimes I get a one tire fire. The sound has only happened a few times but it only does it when I REALLY get on it. That's why I've been driving like a grandma lately.

I already know a rebuild is required but I'm going to be easy on here for the rest of the summer until I park her this winter. I guess that means no more trips to down the 1320....

I guess once I graduate in December I'll be purchasing a TA Performance differential cover, rebuilding the posi unit, and swapping out the fluid. $300 now will hopefully make the car go another few years until I can really tear it down and push 500hp at the wheels and put a 12 bolt or 9". Well, 400hp at the wheels and a 100shot.

that sucks tom. it amazes me how rear ends seem to blow on lightly modded cars, yet ive been chirping 4th gear for a coupe of years now and I have no problems.

The rear isn't blown just yet but I'm milking it. The car has 80k so I'm not that surprised.

for the money your going to waste putting into that 10 bolt you could just buy another stock one for less, it may not be the rear

my 10 bolt never spun both wheels all the time until i put synthetic gear oil in there and gm lsd addative....im thinking the previous owner took it to a ghetto shot that didnt putt in the addative

why not just pull the diff cover and take a look

If it doesn't have the additive in there its because GM didn't do it. Up until last August when I bought the car it had never been serviced anywhere else than Blake Chevrolet in Homestead, FL.

If I pull the cover I really want to put on that new diff. cover but I don't want to spend $150 I don't have at the moment.

Won't even cost me that. I work at a quick oil change while up here at school and pay cost on everything. I pay less for a synthetic oil change than you would going and buying conventional stuff!

                  Woah, feisty...

Yeah, I dunno how mine is. I think, depending on whether the frame is good or not, on my car, I'll just replace the real end with a 9" for future endeavors...

Inside of a differential there are a series of clutch like material that makes them slip when needed, or grab and lock when needed. Sounds to me like your clutch pads are worn.

How about you quit *****ing and ask for an update? I changed the fluid yesterday.

Not sure yet. The roads up here are to wet to get on it hard enough for it to make the noise. I'll let you know when everything dries up.

Should still make the noise when wet. If I am correct it should make the noise when your posi unit is trying to lock up. Although, if it doesn't do it in the rain I wouldn't rule it out because you may not be putting enough load on it.
