  • New Clutch

Well I started working on my Clutch on monday and thought i would show you guys some of the parts i bought. I also found out my car has a one piece steel driveshaft, which is weird because i thought 3.8's had a two piece steel, and ls1's had the one piece aluminum driveshaft. Anyways here's the pics

How much work is it to do the swap? I need another clutch and figured I'd spend the extra money for labor on a better clutch this time.

All LS1 cars with 3.32 or higher gears have aluminum ones. Only 2.73 cars have a steel

Transampimp- The labor was not bad, if you had a whole day you could do a clutch swap in a day easy, i did it in two and thats because i work 7:30 to 4:00 and get home around 4:45. So i had about 9 hours into the swap. I also put royal purple in the trans since the oil isn't changed in the trans nearly as much as the engine.

On our cars, it's a PITA!!

You can't take the bell housing with the trany unless you unhook the exhaust and let the motor rock back.
I just did mine just before the M&G and will never do it again on my back!!!

Is that a Center Force Clutch??

Thanks for the info Kyle. I don't mind spending 5 hours or so working on it. I don't have long tube headers so I don't think it would be to difficult, but I don't want it to turn into a 3 day plus swap. I just don't like having shops take my car for the day anymore. To many places end doing a half ass job when I pay them to work on my car. I feel like I can't trust any shops for a decent rate when it comes to working on it. Especially with an after market part.

you might want to think over the rp, not sure how diff the t5 is from the t56 but rp in my t56 made it grind gears that type of synthetic oil wasn't good for the blocker rings because they are paper , i switched to 3qts of mobile 1 and 1 qt reg and its perfect

                  but thats a t56

Phantom383 yes it is a centerforce dual friction clutch and i love it already, I drove the car last night after the instal was done and I can already tell this thing grabs much better than before.

Syn- Yea i've heard that with many other people, but i had RP in the last time and i didn't have any grinding issues, so maybe it is a t56 thing.

Finally I didn't think it was that bad: Drain the oil, take the drive shaft off, take the torque arm off, Take the brackets at the tail end off, Take the starter off, put jack under the trans, take off transmission mount by tail end, and unbolt transmission bolts, also undo all electrical connections. If you take it one thing at a time it's not to bad. One suggestion though is if you are going to do this get the two foot long extension like i got, it does wonders for those top trans bolts.

ditto on the extensions... and im sure its a lot easier to reach above a T5 than a T56.

                        That's cool Dale!

Eric I have one place that I trust totaly and that is West Michigan Transmissions on 28th just past Byron Center,North side of the road.

These guys are as honest as they come if you are looking for a shop.

It's easy getting it out if you can reach the bolts but it's a PITA getting it back in unless you have help.
                        That thing weighs 80-100lbs empty.
My LT's didn't make it a problem but you have to do the trany and housing seperate or you will have isues!!!
PM me if you need any insructins or addvice.

Any idea on what labor cost now? I paid $400 a few years back including the cost of getting the fly wheel resurfaced. That was at a local GM dealer. I figure the cost has probably gone up since then. I'll check that shop out later next week.
