  • Found the Problem! (Trans)

after slacking off on fixing the trans, i have got motivation to rebuild it for going to the track next week...

    Long story short..

3-4 shift for was bent, added constant pressure to 3rd gear syncro, eventually broke the slider keys. Syncro friction overheated the oil and the combination of highway speeds and high friction locked my trans in gear.

    see.. its was simple

Needless to say, that damaged the surface for the syncro.. so i need to buy a new gear..

I'll let Pictures do the talking!

yeah its the camaro (t-56 trans)

new gear is $119.. so not too bad, but not cheap either

but i already bought the syncro rebuild kit to get the carbon fiber friction material, steel shift fork, bronze fork pads, and billet 3/4 keys..

i will say the upgraded syncros are much better than stock... the static and dynamic coefficients of friction are much closer together.. they did their homework with this material vs the stock stuff. If im not mistaken anything 2001 and after had these from the factory..

you will love how it feels when its done, believe me.

Im happy my stuff is holding together still at 92k ... I am not a gentle with that pistol grip

On the other hand, i like to double clutch around town alot so that probably saves wear.

larry, my only question is what order was the machining and welding done..

i.e. how did they maintain the roundness, surface finish, and heat treat on the bearing race after welding?

If it was welded, heat treated, and then machined.. that would work, but other orders make me wonder..

                        not sure.
All I do know is that the micronite polish made it so shiny I don't want to put them back in the trans

yeah, i just ask because i do that kind of stuff all the time.. and have seen it done wrong far too many times.. It would be a good question to ask the supplier of that part..
