  • Best Clutch and fly for T-56

    Hello everyone!
I did a search and no real answer came up

I am looking for the best clutch and fly combo for a T-56
I read the Centerforce is ok in our application

    Looking for peoples opinions

I would rather spend more for a lighter fly and clutch that is stronger, and just not have to worry about it.

IT will be on a 450hp MAX sbc
    Thanks
    -AJ

I currently have an LS7 and it drives great but it is heavier than my old ram powergrip hd (I run 1-2 mph slower in the qtr mile).

It all depends on what you want but the good news is that clutches go bad so even if you hate it you won't have to live with it for very long.

My powergrip drove like crap but never slipped....that is until it broke (see attached pic). This was after 50-75 4000+ rpm launches at the track and 9,000 hard street miles. I would even consider it again if my LS7 starts slipping. Like I said, they all go bad so you might as well try a few different types.

well first you need to tell us if you have an LT1 or LS1 T56. If its an LT1, then the LS7 these guys are recommending is not an option for you.

Nice job!!!!! I have the ram clutch that is rated at 40% more clamping power. I could break the tires loose into 4th for the first year. After 50,000 miles and 3 years I can't break 2nd loose anymore. Will see what I get this time around. If you have a LS1 T56 I see alot of people going with the LS7 clutch.

Centerforce dual friction holds nice. No complaints so far.. its all about what you willing to spend.. I hear the spec clutches are a nice piece aswell..

I know, will see how bad it is at the track this year. I think I'm going to mix and match pieces this time around. I was told most pressure plates for the LT1 T56 are made by the same company, including the cheap NAPA ones.

I end up paying a GM dealer to do the install. Last time it was $400 labor.

Here's my take on spec clutches:

People complain about bad experiences with them all the time. In my humble opinion i think its because these people have no idea what they are doing. If you expect a Spec clutch to drive like a stock one, you are making a poor life decision. My Spec clutch has one hell of a personality, but after a couple hundred miles I learned how to keep it happy. You cant slip them at a constant rate to take off, rather it must be a fairly quick progressive 'release.' My smoothest take-offs usually chirp the tires or come close. Specs dont like when you slip them, theyll chatter your teeth out if there isnt enough load on it. Yes, load is key. Dumping the clutch or grabbing gears WOT you wont feel any chatter at all, it will bite down smooth as butter... and it will bite good!!! My passengers never know i have a 6-puck 550hp racing clutch unless i slip up on the pedal for a second. But the second someone else tries to drive it.... bad things happen.

Joel that sound like what I'm looking for. I'd probably have to teach myself how to drive a stick all over again. Will I be able to lazy shift with that clutch? I don't like to hammer down every time I shift.

as long as you are reasonably rev matched, lazy shifting is absolutely no problem at all. When cruising around I almost always do 1>3>5>6. It will chatter a little if you are releasing the clutch with too many RPMs for the next gear and not enough load on it... especially when it is breaking in.

Spec recommended 1000 miles of very easy driving for break in. I kinda think that was BS, i put 2k on mine and it didnt break in. It broke in when i started beating the crap out of it.

I love my spec. SPEC hates me cause I have fixed about 20 cars that were having issues with spec clutchs. They send me Pm's on ls1tech all the time.

thats awesome. would you care to share? The only understandable dissappointment i have really seen with them is broken springs. I dont feel sorry for people that think they chatter, learn how to drive the thing!
